NaNoWriMo 2009 Special Trial Edition

“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.”
- Michael Marshall Smith

Writing a book, short story or research paper is about more than hammering away at the keys until it's done. Research, scrawling fragmentary ideas that don't seem to fit anywhere yet, collecting faded photos from old newspapers, shuffling index cards to find that elusive structure - most writing software is only fired up after much of the hard work is already done. Enter Scrivener: writing software that stays with you from that first, unformed idea all the way through to the first - or even final - draft. Outline and structure your ideas. Take notes. Storyboard your masterpiece using a powerful virtual corkboard. View research while you write. Track themes using keywords. Dynamically combine multiple scenes into a single text just to see how they fit. Scrivener has already been enthusiastically adopted by best-selling novelists, academics, lawyers, script writers and journalists - whatever you write, grow your ideas in style.

NaNoWriMo 2009 Trial
Scrivener's first users were NaNoWriMoers - I posted an early beta of Scrivener on the NaNo Technology forums back in 2005, and those initial users helped spread the word about Scrivener, proving feedback that has helped shape and improve the program. This year, we're excited to be able to give something back by becoming official "corporate" sponsors of NaNoWriMo 2009. As well as sponsoring the main event, we're also providing a special trial version of Scrivener for WriMos who would like to test out Scrivener during National Novel Writing Month and some great discounts to participants and winners.

Special Trial Version: Scrivener's trial normally runs for thirty days of use. But so that you can try out Scrivener before NaNoWriMo this year and then use the trial throughout the event should you decide you want to, the trial version that you can download on this page will run right through to the 7th December. So you can download it in October, get used to its features, use it for your writing throughout November, and if you like it you can buy at a discounted price using one of the discount offers below.

50% Discount for All NaNo 2009 Winners: If you achieve your 50,000 words this year to become a NaNoWriMo 2009 Winner, you will be eligible for a 50% discount off the regular licence of Scrivener (which is normallly $39.95). Details will appear on your "I Wrote a Novel. Now What?" page on December 2.

20% Discount for Everyone Else: Even if you don't make your 50,000 words this year, you can still get 20% off the regular price of Scrivener by entering the discount code "NANOWRIMO" in the coupon code text field of our online web store.

Getting Started All you need to do to get started is click on "Download" below to download the Scrivener NaNo 2009 trial. I recommend you also click on "Video Tutorials" and take a quick look at the short installation video to make sure you install Scrivener and its templates properly.

I also recommend taking fifteen minutes to watch the introductory video, in which I go through the main features of Scrivener. After that, to really get up to speed, you can go through the interactive tutorial in the program itself by choosing "Tutorial" from the Help menu.

If you install the Extras, you will find a NaNoWriMo project template available when you choose File > New Project, with some tips on getting started and using Scrivener for NaNoWriMo. Don't feel you have to use that, though - that just creates a basic project already set up with the 50,000 word target to keep things easy. If you want to dive right in and explore more of Scrivener's features, you could equally choose the Empty or Novel templates.

If you have any questions, be sure to drop me a line.

Good luck getting those 50,000 words this year!
