Re: Celebrating ONE YEAR as a monthly published writer

I wrote for a magazine for a couple of years – ages ago now. I did reviews, occasional articles, and then was given a monthly slot. It was incredibly useful experience learning the discipline of writing to a brief – word count, house style, structure – and working with an editor. Despite what I ofte...

Re: "You should write on paper" advice

I recently returned to writing by hand for first draft, and new/replacement scenes while editing; mostly as an experiment. I've found it liberating and fun. I also found I write more words and more descriptively. I think I stay "in the zone" more readily. For me, the main benefit of handwr...

Don't encourage him :-)

On a tangent: It sparked a NiaD thought. A theme for the future could centre around diversity. I suspect that would challenge many of us – in a good way.

Re: Direct access to Thesaurus

Another shortcut option is to use PopClip. The inbuilt plug-in goes to the dictionary, but cmd+2 gets you to the thesaurus. Actions: double-click word (to highlight); click dictionary icon.

Re: Spelling check strangeness?

I believe this is shared behaviour across Mac apps. i.e. it's a macOS thing.

fyi: For me, d'ont is marked as an error, whereas w'ere is not. ere is valid word, so that's not a surprise. (This is for all apps.)

Oddly, Firefox is marking w'ere as an error and d'ont as okay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re: Raw LaTeX, Scrivener 3 and compile process

Something I’ve been working on periodically for a few weeks now is a starter template for those wishing to use Scrivener as a LaTeX “front end” without MultiMarkdown. This is superb. I don't get along with any of the dedicated LaTeX editors, so usually end up in Sublime. Obviously, I'd rather be in...

I do this via View/Corkboard Options/Show Keyword Colours

You can alter the number of keyword chips displayed in the corkboard options.

Re: Where do I start?

In Alan Garner's, The Voice that Thunders , he recounts that during the ninth year of his novel his agent and publisher suggested that he abandon it. He jettisoned both publisher and author and completed the novel in twelve years. At one point he says, "I learnt Welsh in order not to use it&quo...

I'm using High Sierra, but I suspect it works in Sierra. I believe the OS-level tabs stuff started with Sierra; can't remember.

Re: Weak words in Linguistic Focus

It would be nice – there's one now! – to be able to input a list of perceived weak words for reporting in Linguistics Focus (LF). LF is a great addition to Scriv, after all. However, I'd not like the list to be in-built. Most apparent weak words can be used to great effect. Hence the mantra: There a...

Re: Where do I start?

This is a fun open-ended question! Over the years, something I’ve learned from reading the practices of many authors is that everyone does it differently. And it’s a huge range of different not just some subtle tweaks here and there. Oil and water differences. Perhaps blood and tears is a better way...

Re: Project Settings/Section Types disappeared again

The strange thing is that even if I hit "OK" the Section Types are restored when I reload - what version of macOS are you on? macOS: 10.13.2 I've not dug further into when Default Types by Structure gets blown away. I do know that it's happened twice, though – including yesterday – since ...

Re: Project Settings/Section Types disappeared again

I can reproduce this now.

  • Open any project.
  • Open a second project then close it.
  • Project Settings/Section Types is blank.

I think that as long as you don't OK Project Settings, then a reload will fix.
