Usually the box at the top shows the total number of words for the project & session, as per the example below.
But on my latest project, it shows as:
Yet the project contains 26,281 words so I’m a little confused.
Probably the “missing” words are not included in the current Compile group.

Aah, of course, I thought that it was a project total rather than a compiled total. I’d completely forgotten that I’d PDFd a single chapter.
