The Book of Air and Shadows

Hi, all,

I just finished reading Michael Gruber’s engaging novel, The Book of Air and Shadows, about the hunt for a lost Shakespearean manuscript. It is a compelling thriller with a unique narrative structure. It is also a rumination on the impact of narrative archetypes on the way we act. I enjoyed it very much.

It is very good. He also has a brand new book out, The Forgery of Venus, which has to do with a lost Velasquez. A lot of these historical thrillers have less actual history in them than you’d find in an encyclopedia entry, but Gruber really knows his stuff.

I loved the book too. However I do think the earlier series was much better in particular, Valley of Bones, which shows a depth of understanding of the traumatized and a wit which makes the book so much fun as well as tragic. Highly recommended.
