I would appreciate any guidance / instructions on importing Scrivener compile formats into the iOS app. I see the location where this can be done; however, when I export a compile format from my macOS app version, then try to import it in the iOS version, it doesn’t accept the format of the exported file.

Is there some guidance on this somewhere that I may have missed?

(To clarify, I have a Scrivener project in my macOS app that I also sync via Dropbox with my iPad’s iteration of the iOS app; however, when I try to export that very project’s compile format from the desktop, and import it into the tablet app, that latter step simply doesn’t work.)

Many thanks in advance for any who might be able to offer some assistance.

Hi reallyTomFox,

An import from Mac to iOS can't be done, as their compile formats are different beasts.

There's an official response from an L&L team member in this similar thread: https://www.literatureandlatte.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=55127

If you'd like to learn more about the iOS compile format, do a search here on ".scomp".

Or, from within a project on iOS Scriv, press Compile (lower left, next to the Gear box). Click on the Appearance selector. Click Edit. Click +. Click On My iPad. Click ? in the upper right.

That's a very roundabout way to get to an explanation of Scomp instructions. There may be an easier way, but I don't know it. :(

Best,
Jim

Thanks for your reply, Jim. It's very helpful. However, I do hope the L&L folks are reading and realize this is not helpful, i.e., moving between my Mac & iOS devices (phone, iPad, etc) is one of the Apple super powers I so love and need.

Hi kmcmillan,

Anything is possible.

That said, I am unaware of a comparably priced product to desktop Scrivener that has the breadth (output options) and depth (formatting choices) of desktop Scrivener's Compile feature. Nothing else comes close.

I don't work for L&L, so take my opinion for what it's worth, but I highly doubt Keith is considering trying to squeeze the feature set of desktop Compile into the iOS platform. He's said from the beginning that that iOS Scrivener was intended to be a subset of the desktop and that feature parity is not the goal, and he hasn't varied from that strategy at all.

Not trying to be a party pooper here, just helping you with expectation management. :D

Best,
Jim
