Export to PDF/PNG gives unpredictable texture

I've just done a lovely scapple map with a tiled background instead of a flat colour. Rather than using a truly tiled file, I've simply used a large picture and aimed to work within a single use of that file.

However, on trying to export the map to either PNG or PDF, the engines for drawing this background tile seem to work differently to the main scapple engine, leaving me with nasty great tile lines in the middle of my map.

The drawing engine is the same either way - the tiling is done using OS X's pattern tiling methods. I don't recommend using a non-tiling texture, though.

All the best,

The export seems to start the tile in a different place for each of the formats so lines are unavoidable on export without a proper tiling tile to tile with.

I've "manned up" and made a proper tiling tile to tile with and it gets the job done.

When tiling, tiling with a proper tiling tile is definitely the best way to tile, toilsome as it may be. The tile should always start top-left, but there may be a border with some formats.

:)

I'm actually using just an 'almost tiling tile' as the tile for my tiling texture, temporarily.

It still looks awesome. I'd share it here, but to do so would give away the genre for the story of the next NiaD. Should there be one.

But I should say, the pattern definitely looks different on the three different formats (scapple, PNG, PDF) - perhaps it's sizing them or the fonts differently. Might be an issue if you are using a grid texture and are trying to get the notes to align to the background, but for more general ones... not an issue.

Could you send me the texture for testing by PM? As I say, OS X methods handle this, so I doubt there's much I could do, but I'd like to see it. Thanks!

I'll pull something illustrative together tomorrow and send it over.

Hey Keith, I've sent over a full set of files by PM.

For those following purely in this thread, here are some images from the Scapple Map itself and the PNG exporter to better illustrate what I was talking about.

Thanks for that, and for sending me the files. I've realised the problem, now. It's because, when Scapple prints or exports, it doesn't export or print everything from the top-left corner. Instead, it grabs a rectangle that contains all of the notes on the board and only prints or exports that. But this means that the texture then starts at the top-left corner of *that* rectangle when printing or exporting, resulting the differences you are seeing. I'll have to think about that...

No worries... glad to be useful for a change (kinda).

I see why you've set export that way... particularly if the expected use is to start in the middle of the page and spread out...

BUT!

The application window does actually seem set up more for a top left anchor point. For example, if you keep adding notes to the bottom or to the right the map will keep automatically expanding to give you room. Add them to the left or the top, however, and you'll run out of space when you reach the hard edges of the map (requiring a select all and move).

SO...

Given that the window is geared up with a top left anchor, perhaps it's better that print and export do as well?

Else, would it be possible to remove the limits of the edges and expand freely in all four directions?
(although that wouldn't solve the issue of trying to use the tiled texture for alignment).

Also(*), looking at the exported files, I'm not sure if your explanation of the differences is the whole story. If that was the case, wouldn't the PDF and PNG exported files still have the background start in the same place but have the notes moved somewhere else? The exported files seem to have the notes in the right place, but the background start somewhere else.

(*) note the use of the word "also", occasionally misspelt by people as "and".

The edges expand if you drag and drop notes into them.
