Pen?
Reckless abandon?
Precision?
Lots of verbs?

Or, eliminate superfluous elements: "Scrink."
Hmmm... on second thought, maybe not.

In my case:
A sense of rejecton and crushing self doubt.

EDITED:
"A sense of rejection and crushing self doubt."
See, I can't even get *that* right!

I just tried to launch Vellum and learned that the alpha version has expired.
Is there a successor, and if so, where do I download it?
Never mind, I found the beta version.

Yup! I'm in the 14 Pints of Ebony Ambrosia (Guinness) with Amber Nectar Holy Distillation (Jameson) chasers, sprint. I am known around these parts, and indeed, further afield, as the Linford Christie of the EAANHD sprint. I'll not be perturbed if I miss out on the medals...it's the taking part that matters.

I really like this. I've had time for a quick play, and it's astonishingly easy to pick up and play. Just dumping ideas down in no particular order, then make a rational order of them. Tarting up later with new colours and lines etc is fine.

If I wanted a series of pictures, I'd be looking for something more expensive. With Vellum, the main thing is that it's quick. I don't care really about having presentational doohickeys.

There is one thing that would be useful, though -less for me, more for businesses: would it be possible to have a random function, so that you could hit a button, and each time all the cell locations would be moved out of their current sequence? When I'm brainstorming (and yes, I hate that term too), I often have to rewrite my ideas out several times until a logical flow and links appear. If you could do that on Vellum, that would be a very nice feature.

But then I am weird ...

Just a quick update on this project: I have finally put some extra time into this and am close to releasing a 1.x beta, with a mind to putting this one sale in the next couple of months. The one big thing left to do is... Choose a name. All the code left to do (the QuickLook plugin, the registration code and suchlike) requires a name, and yet every name I like has already gone. So, I'll be spending some time going through the dictionary this week and trying to garble words into nonsense words that at least haven't been used by any software yet. Seriously, *everything* is gone. Even Michael Bywater's suggestion, up-thread, of "Scribblit" is gone ("Scribblet" is a new OS X note-taking app). It was never this hard when I came up with the name for Scriv...

Anyway, I hope to have a beta with everybody shortly. A lot of suggestions from this thread have gone into it, although I have kept everything as simple as possible.

Thanks and all the best,
Keith

P.S. Please do reply with any ideas you have for names!

Haven't made any attempt to see if any of these names are taken (probably they are):

Scrivlet
IdeaBridge
WiredNotes (the idea being that the notes are wired together)
ScribeWire
IdeaWire

Anyway, just a few (lame?) thoughts.

Quick-Step

There's an Aussie company called QuickStep, but no one uses the hyphen.
It's the name of an old dance, and totally unrelated to writing.
But in an age of style over substance, it sounds cool and is easy to remember.

I also like BootStrap, for the same reasons: meaningless but memorable.
And, no Vic, we don't want JockStrap.

At first I liked Dotted. I still don't hate that.

Then, I wondered if you called dotted lines something different in the UK. Dashed lines, maybe? So I looked up "dotted line" on Wikipedia. As one does.

Amid the answers, I came across the entry for "skeletal formula" -- shorthand notation for a molecule (it uses dotted lines, and it looks like what you do in Vellum.) And to me, it clicked.

Skeletal
Getting down the bones of your idea.*

Nothing on the app store with that name. And the "bones" metaphor is so prevalent in writing. Breaking the spine of a story, etc.

Also, alliterative with Scrivener.

*Wanted to use "Writing down the bones of your idea", which is infinitely better. But you'd have to get Natalie Goldberg's permission for that, I'd guess.
