My questions is simple, why are older users being going to be charged for version 3? Older users (before Nov 2107) paid the same $45 the newer users (after Nov 2017) did, so why do new adopters get it for free?

Because you got your money's worth, with an actively developed and improved program, whereas recent adopters of Scrivener have had to contend with a version that has not had any major improvements due to development being focused on version 3. It's pretty common for this kind of discount/free upgrade when that upgrade comes a month (or 6) after someone purchases the previous version; Scrivener 3's unexpectedly protracted public beta just made that period extremely long.

Though the time period was much shorter, the same has always been done on the Mac side of things; if you buy one version close enough to the release date of the other--free upgrade!

But you will get a discounted upgrade price, if history is any indication. Somewhere around 40% off, I think.

What Rdale said....

Plus the free upgrade offer coincided with the release of V3 Mac and announcement of Win V3 Beta. L&L didn't anticipate such a long development cycle.

I'm pretty sure that when they announced that deal, they did not expect the wait to be that long. It was originally because Scrivener 3 was now out on mac, and since we where waiting a bit, they threw that in.

Pretty standard practice in the software industry to give free updates to people who buy the old version after the new one is announced. Among other things, it provides some continuity in the revenue stream, rather than people refusing to buy anything at all while they wait for the new version.

You'll get a free update to version 3 when it's available. (Existing users of Scrivener 1 will be able to purchase Scrivener 3 for the discounted price of $25 when the time comes.) We expect to release Scrivener 3 for Windows during 2020.

Freya009 is not a representative of Literature & Latte, and therefore should not use the editorial "we" in this way. I suspect their removal as a spammer is imminent, but they haven't broken any rules. Yet.
