Just wondering... Will Scrivener for Windows really come out this year? I was told that it was coming out in early 2011 and told my parents who were planning to get it for me as a birthday present. Is there a set in stone release date?

There's no set date yet. From what I've seen the current estimate is that it will be out before November (and the accompanying NaNo rush).

For those of us with NaNo coupons, which expire 9/9/11, will we still be able to get the program at a discount when it is released? Thanks!

Yes, the coupon codes have been extended through the end of the year, so they'll still be useable when 1.0 is released.

Hi.

I have just started using the beta/trial version of Scrivener for Windows. I am 10,000 words into a novel and every time I restart Scrivener I am told that I have (currently) 14 days trial left. I'd be happy to pay for it. It's good. 2 weeks in and I'm beginning to see how powerful it is. (But if I have to move off of it, I'll find some other way to make do, probably using wiki technology.)

Can you tell me:
1) what is the status of the formal Windows release?
2) what happens at the end of the trial period?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to raise the question or if it has already been answered elsewhere. I have looked, but not as thoroughly as I should

Hi Nick, and welcome aboard!

A new beta will be released before the current one expires on the 30th this month, and you'll just need to download and install that in order to continue working. There will be an announcement about it and the release notes in the forum, just like this thread for 029. We'll continue to have public betas available up until the official release, at which point you'll be able to buy the license. As this is really a beta, the "trial" period of x many day doesn't take effect yet (that will happen once there is an official version and the trial becomes a real trial), you can use "Reset" if you run out of days before the beta expiration date, though this month that won't be a problem for you.

We haven't made an official announcement on the 1.0 release date, but it won't be much longer.

I don't have a specific time frame, so this is a very loose estimate, but I would say at least a year before a Windows 2.0 version could come out and not unlikely longer. By that point, while Windows 2.0 might match all or most of the Mac 2.0 features, the Mac version will have undoubtedly changed again, at least in minor ways (I wouldn't say that it would be 3.0 by then, since 2.0 only came out last November), so it wouldn't be surprising to always have small discrepancies between the platforms, although all the main features would match. Partly just because the Mac version uses Apple's text engine and some of their exporters and so forth, things are bound to be slightly different between that version and Windows, where different tools are available.

So, the Mac version is ahead and likely to stay there for a while, considering it's had an additional five years of development time, but the Windows version is catching up well in its own right. Responding to your other post, I'd consider the other PC v. Mac advantages and disadvantages and not purchase based solely off where Scrivener is likely to be for each. It's just not possible to say definitely where things will be in a year or two.
