I don't know what I did, and I don't know how to get out of it.

My document is overlaid over the Scrivener screen as a white rectangle with black text. I can scroll through it and it looks like I can make changes.

But I can't get out of it. I can't use anything else on my computer, i.e., I cannot toggle to a different program or directory.

I can't click on the regular Scrivener screen. I can see it but it's dim.

I turned the computer off. Using the button, because ctrl-alt-del did not work. When I turned it on again, there was this document, overlaid on the Scrivener background.

It sounds as though you're stuck in "fullscreen mode". I assume you've tried "Esc" already (that's how you get out of that)?
