For those users who have disabled automatic updates (or want to download the new version before the automatic update filters through), Aeon Timeline Version 0.4.0 (Beta) can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://aeontimeline.wordpress.com/latest-version/

The application has been tested on Snow Leopard and should be compatible, but there may be a few issues that are yet to appear. As always, remember to keep regular backups of your timelines in case you encounter errors.

The big addition to this release is in the improved exporting capabilities. The export mode allows you to filter events based on Tags, Story Arcs, Entities, and manual selection, and then export them to a variety of formats and applications, including:

  • Both Story Arc View and Entity View can be exported to a range of image files (BMP, GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIFF).
  • To Scrivener, via OPML (a better Scrivener exporter will be coming with Scrivener 2.0).
  • RTF document, HTML table
  • Other presentational timeline applications, including Bee Doc’s Timeline and Simile Timeline.

The export system uses a plugin architecture, which makes it easy for further applications to be added in future). If there is an application you wish to see included, please let me know.

Other changes include background images, the ability to specify an entity’s age at first event, improvements to the collapsible timelines, and improved calculation speed.

Before downloading the beta, please read the Introduction and Beta/Forum Rules.

Please post all general bug reports found in this beta as a reply to this thread. Wish list items and discussion of other pending features belong in their own threads.

If the application crashes, please include the crash log and output from the Console in your bug report.

REPORTED/KNOWN BUGS

* Known display problem in Tiger where the date is displayed next to the overview bar.
* Known problem in Tiger where the split view grabber in the footer has no effect.

Hi

I downloaded the new version of Aeon Timeline. I tried the export function, but I had problems.

The export in HTML table, OPML and Scrivener 2.0 didn't produce any file. I tried lot oh times, but only RTF and Image worked. I didn't try Simile and Bee Docs Timeline.

Am I the only with this problem?

Thank you very much, your program is the best t work with timelines.

Hi,
I will check this again when I get home, but it should be working. Can you open up the Console and look to see if there are any errors?

In the story arc view, at what point does the stretchy timeline take effect?

Picture 1.png
Picture 1.png (18.63 KiB) Viewed 1905 times

When the stacked up events reach the bottom of the screen? Also, the zoom slider - is it connected to anything yet? It doesn't seem to do anything that I can see.

Context: brand new file; I'm starting an outline for this year's NaNo. In addition to the stack of events shown, I have two birth events a couple of decades earlier.

If I filter the timeline so it only shows items tagged "to write" (most of the red ones, currently) and refresh the view, they space out a little bit but not much. Remove the filter and the yellow ones show decent length duration bars. (Background info spanning several months in some cases.) If I refresh again, it shrinks back down to this stack.

The stretchy timeline in entity view still works just fine.

Looking forward to the fantasy calendar and non-linear narrative thing you mentioned ages ago... but really that can wait until after NaNo if you're going to participate this year.

Has anyone questioned why we can't have the display of dates on the timeline in a non-Euro format, as either May 23, 1999 or 05-23-99? I know it shows that way on the far right, but the labels on the far left are in 23-05-99, and that's fairly alien for US users, at least of my vintage. (Sorry to be a complainer; I would really like to make use of AT.)

Matt,

Just downloaded 0.4.0, and now the app doesn't recognize anything that existed previous to the download. That is, if I "Open Recent," it claims "no entities are currently visible." If I "File/Open," the Open window appears, but when I make my selection, the Open window disappears and nothing opens to take its place. If I "Launch Website," nothing happens.

Before downloading 0.4.0, I was running 0.3.1, was very happy with it, and was only waiting to comment in the forum until I had finished the reorganization of my novel using the terrific story arc feature. I'm on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.8, and I did nothing between downloading the new version of Aeon and trying to open my file, which worked fine on Saturday using the previous version.

If possible, I'd love to go back to Aeon 0.3.1, so I can continue my work while you determine if I've identified a problem.

I'm a long-time user (or as long as possible), and I've commented in the forums before. I love Aeon, and 0.3.1 worked flawlessly for me. I find it very effective in working with my novel (which is written using Scrivener), and I'm looking forward to your further developments. Keep up the good work!

Scott

I opened the console. Here's the message

I hope it's useful, I'm not expert with this.

Hi all,
Sorry, the forum was down when I tried to check last night. I will look into these issues today/tonight and see if I can find out what is happening.

Especially for those whose data is not showing, could you please email me your timeline file to support (at) scribblecode (dot) com. I could not reproduce this with my timeline files, so there may be something different about yours. I will keep any data confidential and delete it at the end. Also, what operating systems are you using, and does anything show up in the Console logs?

Janra, are all those events displayed on the correct date, and the timeline must expand more, or are they displaying to the far left incorrectly? (I am on my iPhone so it is hard to tell). Could you perhaps email the file too?

Sorry for the delayed response.

Hi Druid,
All date formats should be customisable in timeline settings. You can set the date format for the inspector, the main view, and there is a set of radio buttons to toggle month/day or day/month for the actual timeline dates at the side.

You're right. I clicked them several times last night, but today they did not correct until I edited the first one, which had shifted from month 11 to month 5. Once I revised that one, all the others adopted the new style. Thanks for the tip.

Incidentally, for anyone who wants to revert while the issue is sorted, the previous DMG is still downloadable from:

http://release.scribblecode.com/AeonTimeline_0_3_1.dmg

It will warn you that it expires August 31, but it is actually September 30, so it will function for the rest of the month. Please do check the Console log, and if possible, send through a copy of the timeline causing the problem - it will help me sort out this problem as quickly as possible.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks Luca,
There are no error messages in the Console, just some debugging stuff I accidentally left in. But that is handy, because it tells me the export plugins loaded fine.

Could you create a brand new timeline with just a few events, and then attempt to export that - keeping all the filters in place. I would like to work out if it is related to that particular file, or your particular computer. Also - what operating system are you running?

Are you just trying to save to the Desktop? The HTML file and OPML files should have that as an extension, while the Scrivener 2.0 file (not useful yet, I meant to disable that option) should have an XML extension.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi janra,
Can you add another Story Arc, and see if it creates a more standard balance then? I did something to increase the allowed height if there is only one story arc (so that it doesn't take up just the top tiny part of the screen) - I suspect this might be to blame.

If I am right, adding other story arcs and hitting Refresh should make it balance out as usual. If so, I will fix up that calculation for the next bug fix release (once I sort out the other problem reported here).

Matt,

FYI, downloaded & reinstalled 0.3.1, and things seem to be working perfectly.
