For those users who have disabled automatic updates (or want to download the new version before the automatic update filters through), Aeon Timeline Version 0.2.2 (Beta) can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://aeontimeline.wordpress.com/latest-version/

The previous versions of the software will expire on January 31st, and so will need to be replaced. This version extends the expiration date to June 31st.

Other changes include:
  • User Interface State (Inspector state, toggle ages on/off, etc.) is now saved with your timeline, so it will always open as you last saved it.
  • Date format for Entity View and Inspector can be controller separately, with the option to not display dates in Entity View.
  • Option to toggle between Day/Month and Month/Day format in the margin of the timeline.
  • Option to switch off the time display in the calendars.
  • Calendars now use 12 hour format plus AM/PM, rather than 24 hour format.
  • Updated Application and Document Icons.
  • Numerous bug fixes: the application no longer hangs if dragging an event past the end of the timeline, the date format is saved correctly, you can filter on tags regardless of whether they are hot tags, and several display/interface bugs.

Before downloading the beta, please read the Introduction and Beta/Forum Rules.

Please post all general bug reports found in this beta as a reply to this thread. Wish list items and discussion of other pending features belong in their own threads. Before posting a bug, please review the documentation and the below list of already reported bugs, to see if it is a known problem.

If the application crashes, please include the crash log and output from the Console in your bug report.

REPORTED/KNOWN BUGS

* Known display problem in Tiger where the date is displayed next to the overview bar.
* Known problem in Tiger where the split view grabber in the footer has no effect.

Your documentation needs to be updated :-)

In the beta license section (chapter 2) you say it will expire on 1 February, and on the second bullet point you mention "before its official 0.1 release".

Is there any way to get the update framework to update the documentation as well as the program by the way? I like the automatic update, but if I want the pdf manual I have to download the dmg.

* When opening a file, the overview bar doesn't show the blue hilight to indicate where you are. As soon as you scroll even a tiny bit it appears.
* I try to change the event title in the inspector; when I press enter after typing, the event changes to the new value and the title in the inspector reverts to the old value. Clicking away and the re-selecting the event shows the new title in the inspector.
* If the event title in the inspector doesn't fit into the field, the text doesn't shift to show me the end of the text when I move the cursor there using the keyboard. I have to either widen the inspector to crazy widths or edit the end of the title "by braille", counting characters and typing blind.
* When right-clicking on an event, the current event type is not indicated in the list (eg with a checkmark).
* I changed the name of a project entity and the "<old name> started" event was renamed to "<new name> born".
* Occasionally the timeline jumps all the way to the bottom when I try to scroll just a little bit. Whether I'm trying to scroll up or down doesn't seem to make a difference. I am using the 2-finger touchpad scroll on a powerbook G4; I haven't noticed that jumping behaviour in other applications.
* I set the beginning of my timeline to 1 January 2005, and when scrolled right to the top this is what it looks like:
date crop.png
date crop.png (22.28 KiB) Viewed 1345 times

(yeah, really minor visual issue.)
* If I click off an event in the event title space, the inspector blanks and indicates that there is no event selected and the event itself de-hilights. If I click off an event in the entity space, the event de-hilights but the inspector continues to show the previously selected event, until I either click between events in the event title space or I select another event.
* When I click on intersections to add participation, the event is hilighted but the inspector doesn't show the event details.
* After taking the previous image (where I shrunk the event display space to bring the scroll bar closer to the overview for a smaller image) I expanded the window again and noticed this:
header bar.png
header bar.png (17.84 KiB) Viewed 1347 times

It looks like the filter text field got cut off where the tag icon overlapped it in the previous image.
* If I may ask, do you have the timescale set to collapse only if there's nothing between calendar boundaries? On my timeline project there is an entire month that's expanded out to show days (but not times) when I have three closely spaced events in the last two days of the month, and couple of decades expanded out to show quarters when I have one event in '18, one in '29, one in '36, and one in '39.
* What determines whether event or age text goes in front? Order the participation type was added?
event overlap.png
event overlap.png (9.84 KiB) Viewed 1347 times

(Yes, my entities are packed close together. One disadvantage to the 12" powerbook size...)

Ok, that's it for this post. I'll post again when I get another chance to sit down and spend some more quality nitpick time :-)

A long list, but it could be worst. Most of them are minor, and can wait for the next release. I did have a longer reply here, but realised it was unnecessary. I will look into all the bugs you reported and fix them up for the next release. This may not be until Story Arc View is ready, but if a few more build up I might add in some of the other items on the list (fuzzy dates, fantasy calendar) and release something else between now and then.

The actual code to do the collapsing and expanding is pretty complicated, and I am not entirely happy with it. At some point, probably before the next release, I will spend a lot more time working out a better algorithm to do the work. It is complicated by having to swap on "major tick" boundaries (eg. a decade view must end at 1930,1940 etc.), and making sure that each region is large enough that users don't lose their bearing.

I think it is better than having a single flat timeline, but definitely something I will improve down the track.

Pure random chance, by the look of the screenshot!

Your feedback is appreciated, even if the extra bugs on the to do list are not! Still, there is nothing too bad so far in that list.

Next time you are working with Scrivener, could you expand it out to the full view you are using on your powerbook, and take a screenshot of your entire screen, with and without the inspector open (to a natural working width). Send the screenshots to: support (AT) scribblecode (DOT) com

The smallest screen I have to work with is a 13 inch MacBook, so it would be useful to see what you are battling at 12 inches, and if there is more I can do to help out.

Think of it this way: it's good enough that it's worth it to me, spending all that time searching them out! :-)

Ah, I suspected it was a major tick boundary thing.

This is now bugging me, and I'm going to see if I can come up with something... I have done some programming work with dates before and I appreciate how annoying they can be to work with.

May I ask for information on what restrictions the date handling system you're using has? I wouldn't want to suggest something that simply isn't possible.

Personally I'd bet on the order the circles were added in. A quick poke at my timeline shows that when I add a participation circle it overlaps the one directly to the right. For consistency, you may want to enforce that the left-most entity is "front" and the right-most is "back" in cases of overlap. You could do it the other way around just as easily but I think cutting off text is worse than having text overlap symbols.

You want a shot of Scrivener, or of Aeon? I can send either or both.

Knowing what the algorithm does, I doubt it has anything to do with the order they are added, but rather, just the order they are drawn to the screen. I am somewhat surprised it isn't already consistent, but I will fix it up for the next version.

You do know you can make the gap wider so there is no overlap, right?

Oops, yes I definitely meant Aeon. Not sure what made me type Scrivener. I think I was swapping between writing the reply and an email to Keith at the time :)

Of course I know that - I'm the one who squished them together like that in the first place :-)

It comes down to screen space - having the last letter overlap lets me squeeze another entity column onto the screen, and the overlap doesn't bother me. It was only the display inconsistency that I was noting.

Crash report:

Aeon had been running for a bit over a day at this point.

I had just added a new event by double-clicking the time scale, and had typed a much longer comment than usual in the notes field of the new event form (not the inspector). After I clicked OK to save the event, I switched to a different application to do something else. A little while later, I got the "unexpectedly quit" popup and clicked "relaunch".

The console log: (from just before the crash to just after the restart)

Here's an oddball one.

So I created an event, typed some notes, and chose a hot tag, then saved/created the event.

In the inspector, the hot tag wasn't there. So I added it again in the tags field. Each time I clicked away and back, the hot tag would vanish. I created the tag and set it as a hot tag through the tag management interface, at the same time; I had prior to this set two existing events to use that hot tag.

After about three tries, I shrugged and left it.

I continued working on my timeline, adding a bunch of scenes and rearranging a few others, and I clicked on the event mentioned above. My notes were gone, and in their place was this:

(
<NSCFType: 0x5ce7d50>,
<NSCFType: 0x496dce0>
)

Obviously this is not what I typed in my notes. I'm not writing a novel about mac programming ;-)

I'm sorry I didn't look at the console or note the time when the hot tag wouldn't stick, so while I think the console entries around 11:50 are related to the hot tag, I don't know. That's the only problem that's jumped out at me today.

Console:
(From the time I opened the program today until now.)

And after I re-typed the notes in the above mentioned event, I saved, then checked a few other events. One of the last ones I entered before discovering the code in my notes contained the following instead of the note I had typed:

{
"dyn.agu8y63n2nuuha5dbrf1ca2pxqry0wkduqf31k3pcr7u1e3basv61a3k" = "NeXT plain ascii pasteboard type";
"public.utf8-plain-text" = NSStringPboardType;
}

Nothing new in the console after the items copied above.

I definitely need to fix this as a matter of priority. I will release a fix as soon as I have one ready.

Yeah, I wasn't too happy about losing the notes. I did go through and check the rest of the events, and it was only the two, which I had been working with at that time, that were messed with. So I could just redo those two notes from memory and there wasn't really anything lost.

After restarting Aeon a while later, the hot tag that wouldn't stick started sticking again, and I could mark a few more events with it as expected. Although at first after restarting Aeon, the hot tag didn't show up in the hot tag filter area, until I clicked on the tag edit button to see if it was still there. Then it showed up.

I'm having fun working with this, filling in back story and between-scenes story.

I have made some progress with this and fixed up at least a few of the problems. Just testing to see if any further problems show up before I release a minor release to fix these serious bugs.

I will probably clean up those interface bugs listed above that I can do easily also, before releasing it on the weekend.

As I have just released a new beta version, I have locked this topic.

The new release hopefully fixes all of the reported bugs from this thread (with the exception of the odd scroll view jumping). If this is not the case, please let me know in the new topic thread.
