You can already associate an event as the "death event" for a character.
To do so, instead of left-clicking at the intersection point to cycle through "observer/participant/no participation", right-click. You will be presented with a menu that allows you to select 'Death' as well. I think this is mentioned in the documentation already, but it is a long document
