I have one picture in each story and throw them in as they are. My Q.: Are there basic design-options in Scrivener to create shadows etc. for inserting photographs?

Do you mean 'shadow' as a placeholder for a photograph, or to have photographs with 'drop shadows' (as in the Photoshop option)?

I don't think you will find any frame of drop settings for photos in Scrivener. Philosophically, such features are the provenance of page layout programs -- where the fine points of book layout are handled best, such as InDesign. Some layout niceties, especially with photos, such as text wrap-around you will need to do some post-processing of your compiled output to acheive.
