I don't know if such suggestions are welcome, if not I'll keep them to myself from now on. As an old Windows programmer (Is it safe to reveal such a damning character flaw here?) I'd consider using two button graphics, one raised and one sunken, and swapping them on each button press to fake the selected status look.
