Scrivener 1.1 (1.055b) Public Beta - new and updated (AGAIN)

Antony - behaviour changed in the recent beta. Previously, the top or right split would always close. Whether a document is "locked" or not has nothing to do with this - remember that it is possible for both documents to be locked. If a document is locked in place, all it means is that selections in the binder will not affect it even if it has the focus. It can still be closed.

In 1.1 (and the current beta), if you hit the keyboard shortcut to close the split, the unfocussed editor/document will be collapsed and the current editor will become main (whereas previously, the left or bottom document would always have become main). Like I say, "Locked in place" has nothing to do with this.

That's what I thought, oh well. OK, newbie question time... is it possible to change which split has the focus with the keyboard? I really like being able to split and 'unsplit' without having to use the mouse...

Unfortunately, I can recreate neither crash. As always, I really need exact steps that lead to the crash *every* time. One off crashes that cannot be reproduced are impossible to track even with a crash report (crash reports do not help without full context).

If the crash is consistent, there must be particular circumstances or a problem with the project. If you can give more information, I would appreciate it.

KEITH...Apologies for the hasty and sketchy crash report. It happened just as I was leaving for an appointment and thought it worth at least sending the crash report. As you suggest this problem seems to be project-specific, as I can only duplicate it it one project. I would be happy to send you that project if it would be useful as it is quite repeatable therein. To get this crash, I highlighted a folder in the binder, created a new text file using Documents>New text, and when I try to delete that document by hitting <delete>, then Scrivener Crashes. I was able to remove that document from the project only by moving it to the Trash and Emptying the Trash.

I cannot recreate this crash in a new project so it does seem to be project specific, or ratther document specific, and it also happens to children I make by hitting return when that doc is highlighted in the binder.

Any insights you could provide into this would be much appreciated. I dragged and dropped the offending doc onto a new project and it does not crash when deleted from that new project, so it seems to be some odd interaction between that doc and the project that contains it.

I downloaded the current beta and I noticed that when I use the scrollball on my mighty mouse the scrollbar on the left pane blinks in and out. It happened when part of the icon was showing at the bottom of the pane, but it went away after I resized my window. Weird.

A project contained just one html page in the research folder. When adding another html page and clicking on the name of the new page in the binder at first only the other page was displayed, then Scrivener crashed.

After restarting both html documents were ok and visibible.

the toolbar thing you mention sounds like a general NSView redrawing bug that exists on Tiger. I have often found my whole toolbar completely blank (more often in Scrivener, because I use it more, but also in other programs, too). I reported it to Apple and it was a known bug. There are other toolbar redrawing bugs, too. Hopefully they should all be fixed in Leopard, but I doubt they will be fixed in any future updates to Tiger, I am afraid.

Possibly one such known bug is this (although it never occured to me before in Scriv or other apps): I customized ther Scrivener toolbar in zoomed mode by adding, removing and shifting icons, and when finished, the tooltips for the icons (in small icon view) were still indicating the old icons names. Closing and reopening the project solved the issue.

I'm using the current beta on a G4 17-inch Powerbook running 10.4.5.

Working on an unremarkable text document -- not even a script.

Several times a session while I'm typing, Scrivener stops recording what I type and I get the spinning beach ball. Sometimes the typing is buffered and appears after about 30 seconds. Sometimes not.

Happened again this morning while I was trying to highlight a word. Click-dragged over it three times without response, then got a spinning beach ball. ten seconds later, it highlighted.

Known bug?

It might be worth trying an experimental change on preferences:

Try Auto-save after 60 seconds and do not enable Subversion/CVS. Then try reducing the time until the beach ball reappears.

If that doesn't work it might be time for DiskWarrior.
