The L&L website offers a “reader view” to mobile (iOS) devices, but the forum doesn't offer up either that same choice or a proper mobile version of itself…or it doesn't to my tiny iPod touch.

Is a mobile version of the forum available? :?

TIA

I'm guessing this is a computer-says-no moment...

I installed a ForumRunner plug-in a while back. It works all right, nothing fancy, but maybe a step up from using a browser if you don’t like the theme on mobile.

Dear Ioa

Apologies for not replying to this post earlier: somehow I missed your message.

Many thanks. I *love* the theme on the mobile, but I just can't read it very easily.

How do I access the ForumRunner plugin? Or is it something I have to download from the Apple App Store?

TIA

The plug-in is the part in the website, you don't have to worry about that. It just provides the necessary interface for the ForumRunner app (which yes you have to get from iTunes) to do its thing with a forum. I sometimes get an error when logging in, but I've never noticed any negative effects.

THANKS. I'm off to the App Store now.

Hmph, so it is, shows how much I use it for anything other than reading, I suppose. :) It seems to work okay in iOS 8 for that, but not for much else. Well I suppose I'll have to figure something out as a replacement. A theme for mobiles would be my preferred option, I've made a note to look into it.

Not holding out much hope for it working with iOS 9 (which is what the iPod is on).

Yep, a theme for mobiles would be great…especially as so much web-traffic is mobile-generated these days.

Lot of work involved to get a mobile theme for the forum?

phpBB doesn't have a bundled theme to switch on?

Yeah it’s never something that really bothered me for some reason. I personally really like zooming and panning a page to read it, that’s how I’ve always done it from the first iPod Touch. I often don’t care at all for the mobile version as you can’t zoom out and get the big picture and are stuck with a 48pt body text font more often than not for some reason. I’ve seen some sites with the font so massive, with so much leading, you could only read half a dozen lines at a time—on a screen that is only a bit shy of a paperback novel in height and 300 DPI! I’ll usually look for a way to get out of the mobile version of a site if I can. But some of the buttons and controls in phpBB do press the limits of that—those little orange icons to jump to the newest unread post for example.

Mainly, what I’m saying is, there may be a lot of mobile things for phpBB, but I have to find one that doesn’t make me want to cry.

This thread says phpBB's default theme is responsive:

Accessed on my iPod, it looks great.

The Scrivener forum doesn't use the default theme, so users don't see a responsive design?

Ah. Just me then. Don't want to drive you to tears (that's vic-k's raison d'être).

Looked through the L&L stylesheets. Can see that the forum doesn't come with a responsive css stylesheet (as the phpbb.com forum does). Answered my own Q.

Oh I’m sure plenty of people like the look, I just don’t get along with it very often. The phpBB mobile theme is quite nice though, a reasonable font size, no hugely stripped back functionality that I can see, and it retains the feel of the original. I can definitely fly with that—my guess is its not working because we modified the default theme a long time ago to change the header and such, before any of this was something anyone did, so it hasn’t benefited from updates.

And what are the chances of it being tweaked to support the responsive design? Or not enough demand to warrant an update? I can't be the only one, can I?
