It used to be — sometime, say, in the middle of the previous century — that any publicity could be construed as beneficial: I don’t care what you say about me, so long as you spell my name correctly.
How relevant is that today: Does a negative review (of a book) necessarily work against it, or might it keep title and author in the public eye? Half a dozen positive reviews (a 4 and five 5s) did absolutely nothing for one of my mystery novels; perhaps I ought to have pilloried the thing myself.
