Re: quote marks

Thank you. The inconsistency may be user error. It looks as if the Mac preferences are the issue. My system looks different from yours ... I found the smart quotes in Preferences/keyboard, but "smart quotes" was not checked, and checking it seems to solve the problem. As an aside, I found ...

quote marks

I have selected Times New Roman as my default font. Serif, with curly quotes. My draft came out with curly quotes, except certain single quotes, which came out straight, as in the sample. Why?

Re: File folder meaning

Thanks much. I figured it was simple, but I couldn't find the answer. Many thanks.

File folder meaning

I'm flummoxed. I know there's a simple solution tho this issue, but I can't find it in the Manual. In the novel format, I treat chapters as folders and scenes w/in chapters as documents/files. On some folders, there's a small document showing, but on most, no such small document. See the attached. &...

Frustrating quote marks

In Scrivener compile, add a check box that converts all straight quotes to the quote of the template font.

Re: Quote marks and Compile

There's something else going on, at least in my copy of Scrivener. I do have a workaround after some hours of searching and many expletives: compile to Word (which uses a template specifying Times New Roman and curly quotes). Replace all single quotes with single quotes ... turns all straight quotes...

Re: Quote marks and Compile

Aha! I may have found a solution, thanks to http://practicaltypography.com/straight-and-curly-quotes.html If I compile out a Times New Roman sample that contains both curly and straight quotes to Word (the .doc format; haven't tried .docx), select all the text, do a Find and Replace, type a single q...

Re: Quote marks and Compile

... and further to my confusion: a typographical reference at http://practicaltypography.com/straight-and-curly-quotes.html says 'smart' quotes are the curly kind (which makes sense) as differentiated from 'straight' quotes, which also makes a lot of sense. Sorry for the confusion. Unfortunately, wh...

Re: Quote marks and Compile

Further to quote marks and compile: My editor wants Times New Roman, including Times New Roman punctuation. This is standard in the industry, he says. So far, I have been unable to solve the problem that my 89,000-word MS is shot through with so-called smart quotes. 1. I know I can force the use of ...

Re: Quote marks and Compile

Jennifer, Thanks for a sensible reply. On checking, I found that the offending smart quotes were in my scrivener text  and Scrivener had simply reproduced them in Word. So, problem solved, right? But HOW did those pesky marks get in there? I found the following answer at All Things From My Bra...

Quote marks and Compile

When I compile text to .doc format, often (but not always) the quote marks do not stay in the Times New Roman font I use in my standard template. See the sample below. Both the "rounded' marks I associate with TNR and the straight ones I think you're seeing above are considered TNR by Word. Unf...

Auto label

I use the Label and Status, plus custom data, to organize my writing. Writing a novel, I always use files for scenes and folders for chapters. Is there a way I can make a new file assume it's a chapter in Label or Status?

Export Outline selectively

Is there a way to export the outline to CSV selectively. I use folders for chapters, files for sub chapters. Can I export Chapters only?

Re: Stitching together references

I may well being dense here, but I've been reluctant to use the split in the past because I use folders as chapters and files as separate (###) segments of chapters. The files thus represent time, place or POV changes, and I want to keep those in place. I'll do a backup and then pursue your suggesti...
