Re: Free Homes for Writers

Publishers Weekly just released an article about those once-free homes for writers in Detroit. Now they are to be rent-free. Beginning in 2017, writers who apply to live in one of the nonprofit's renovated houses will have the option to stay there rent-free for as long as they wish, but they will no...

MacOS Sierra & Dropbox Issues

Dropbox and the just-released Mac OS update, Sierra, may not play well together. Here are Dropbox's suggestions: https://blogs.dropbox.com/dropbox/2016/09/macos-sierra/ The issue seems to be that synching to two cloud services creates problems. You must use one or the other not both. The posting als...

Dropbox security issue

I've checked and what he says is right. Dropbox has taken for itself the ability "to control [my] computer." I quote from the first linked article below: No, I can assure you that your memory isn’t faulty. You don’t remember doing that because Dropbox never presented this dialog to you, as...

Synch improvement

I just ran into it again and it is frustrating, quite frustrating, although the fix would be easy. Scrivener on my MacBooks has as issue that's probably the result of not being able to upgrade past 10.7. The result is that I end up with with Scrivener crashing and that project not being able to be o...

Re: Forcing a Master Project—Urgent!

Thanks Lunk! Saving under another name worked perfectly. Stripping out all but the book itself shrunk that project down from 88 meg to a far more manageable 1.7 meg. This trouble has rattled me though. There are few things I hate more that losing writing. I think I'll come up with an outside-Dropbox...

Re: Forcing a Master Project—Urgent!

Many thanks. It's the first time I've had a tech problem solved by a computer-literate cat—and a quite cute on at that. You've done what I've thought of doing and the sky did not fall. That's good. The sheer weirdness of these problems has left me afraid to try anything. Chapters seem to come and go...

Forcing a Master Project—Urgent!

I'm not sure how, but I've got so many enough different versions of a project that I won't bother to describe them in detail. The problem began when a single chapter I'd written on my Mac went missing on all machines: Mac, Macbook, and iPad. And no, it didn't end up in the Conflicts folder either. N...

Scrivener for iOS release top-rated

Only a few hours after its release, Scrivener for iOS is already the top paid productivity app. Let's hope the app store editors give it top of window billing and include it among the "New Apps We Love." Keith has labored untold hours getting this right. If you've downloaded it, be sure to...

Re: iOS Demo Video

Keep in mind who I criticized in that video. My target was Apple, which often assumes that its average customer has the brains and attention span of a gnat. Look at their aids. Lots of movement, but they tell you nothing. They assume constant motion like a four-year-old who has had too much sugar. I...

iOS Demo Video

From James Pratt on the Blog: "Very excited about the IOS version, but the video wasn’t much help. REALLY LOUD and distracting music that didn’t explain the product at all. Just do a regular old voice over video and tell us what we are seeing and dump the music." From KB on the Blog: &quo...

Writer's Block: A Supercut

Try watching this the next time the inspiration to write is not coming:

With cuts from 53 films, my hunch is that the two creators had bad cases of writer's block and decided to do this supercut instead.

AlphaSmart alternative knows Japanese

I hesitated to mention this, since the Alphasmart Neo and Neo2 sell so cheaply on ebay, typically $25 to $30. But some may find it's not quite what they want and may be willing to pay around $200 for its equivalent in something new. If so, you might want to check out Amazon for a line of devices tha...

MacNN Interviews Keith about Scrivener

You'll almost certainly want to read the Scrivener news in this MacNN interview: http://www.macnn.com/articles/16/01/28/the.history.and.the.future.of.software.including.the.much.awaited.ios.scrivener.132221/ Here's perhaps most interesting news, the dates for Scrivener 3.0 and Scrivener for iOS: Whi...

Drop out of school?

The BBC has a story about one of my favorite publishers, Penguin, dropped university degree requirements for jobs. Publisher Penguin Random House says job applicants will no longer be required to have a university degree. The firm wants to have a more varied intake of staff and suggests there is no ...
