Re: bad trouble, end of the world -- Scrivener won't run

I'd try deleting your preferences--or move them somewhere other than the default directory--and seeing if that doesn't fix the problem. Or upgrade to 2.0.4...

Re: When bad characters do bad things

I've encountered this with D&D, actually--though since I've just finished the first draft of my first novel, we'll see if that translates to writing, as well. I once played a completely amoral character whose only obsession was with legality. Upon learning of a child slavery ring, he wanted to s...

Re: A few suggestions for writing tools

Scrivener does have a word frequency list, actually. I'd be interested in the total writing time thing, but I recognize that that's gotta be one of the lowest priority things possible ;)

Re: Importing 11-page PDF into Scrivener document

Could you not compile your document, save it as a PDF, and then directly add the PDF survey pages where appropriate? That way, you do not need to worry about image conversions or DPI. The point of a PDF is to have a print-ready file, so why try and fight it? Alternatively, do the PDFs contain text d...

Re: words per page

You can change the font around in the compile settings, but remember that Scrivener isn't meant for final layout, so you might not get exactly what you're looking for. If you want it to estimate number of pages based on a specific word count per page, then you can do that under the Project Statistic...

Re: Pages or --?

If Word is good for tables, I weep for the state of general word processors. That said, I can't think of anything better than it, aside from spreadsheet applications.

Re: Vocabulary

An Unabridged dictionary is the cheapest method. The Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Edition) has twenty volumes and costs £750 sterling. I think in the case of English I'd go for an "abridged" dictionary  Best, Martin. It's a good thing I don't have $1000 lying around to spend on di...

Re: Tracking changes

Rudimentary--perhaps even decent--support could probably be done with one of the diff libraries...but it's probably best to not have a feature rather than to have it half-baked.

What monitor is that? I've only ever come across one rotating monitor, and it was one that came with an HP computer.

Re: Preferences don't "take"

Are you out of storage space on your hard drive? If so, your system won't save preferences.

Re: Mirror margins and justification.

As for justification, that should work, but in your screenshot you have selected folders in the "Formatting" pane of the Compile sheet - have you definitely set up justification for the text row as well? Aha! Thanks; that did it. I thought the text box was a general overview of all settin...

Re: What is correct English?

Gotta love those little grammar/punctuation puzzles. The strangest one I know of (though it deals with homonyms more than punctuation) is: Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo bufallo Buffalo buffalo. It's supposed to be grammatically correct, but I still think that somebody just took a word out ...

Re: Mirror margins and justification.

Ah, well, it was worth a shot. Thanks. Too bad; it's the only feature that I need to just use Scrivener for layout, but I bet there's tons of people who say that with a whole gamut of features ;)
