Project won't open after computer crash

I just had some sort of power interruption while in the midst of working on a lengthy project. I had just hit save and after rebooting, I see that all the files (RTFD, and such) still exist in the file package. The trouble is the project itself no longer opens. I click its icon and Scrivener will op...

Re: How many pages did I write?

Not a moderator, but I do work on occasion as a fiction editor. In those terms, yes, think in terms of word count. [To guesstimate in the fiction world, assume 250-275 words/page.] Page numbering is quite variable depending on printing typeface and layout. My 175,000 word novel has a range of 469 to...

Re: Dialogue Exercises?

Dialogue in fiction should probably never be a transcription of actual dialogue. Very seldom does a conversation in real life move at a pace that many readers would tolerate in a novel setting. Avoid overuse (some might say any use) of "um" or "y'know". A trick would be to transc...

Although proper upon examination, on first reading, this sounds extremely anti-semantical.

Re: timeline

To offering a contrasting viewpoint—and I am not saying this to cast poor opinion upon Aeon—the beta version has not worked at all for me: it crashes every time I try to use it. Being a beta version, this isn't unusual. I am looking forward to seeing how it works when I have the opportunity to make ...

Re: Editing Everything

A few places I've lived, I've been lucky enough to have encountered reading groups. That is, groups of writers who, instead of offering straight critique reading each other's work, get together and read their stuff aloud. One group like this in Chicago meets every week, and offers open mic once a mo...

Re: Motivating myself while waiting to hear...

It's unlikely I've ever, at one time, had eleven pieces on hand, all of which deserved to be out looking for a home. (I count a multiple submission as a single item.) Perhaps if I didn't treat a rejection as proof that the story (or whatever) needed to be re-thought and re-written.... In my experie...

Re: Editing Everything

I edit according to what the writing is for and where it is going. For instance, I edit a post on this forum far more closely than I edit an email sent to remind myself do something. When in the heat of an initial draft of a story, I tend to do no editing whatsoever. I write the story with typos mis...

Re: Motivating myself while waiting to hear...

An author friend of mine (not to drop names, but Mort Castle is not a "big" enough name to sound like I'm schmoozing) tells his students that at that point in their process, the magic number is 11. That is, have 11 submissions out of various sorts (novels, non-fiction, short stories, artic...

Re: Another file just disappeared

JRP: I have no doubt of loveablility; I've read a number of threads before joining in (and buying Scrivener). Just seems that cmd-delete doesn't just send files to the trash, it's a red-button trigger for bitterness. As Keith pointed out, enough people blame the program for their own errors, long-ti...

Re: Another file just disappeared

Jaysen, Thanks for the reply. I tried to keep my comment sarcastic (I hope I had my computer's Sarcasm Filter turned off), and I don't think yours was the most barbed in any case. I like the suggestion of having a preference setting for the Delete (solo-key) or the Cmd-Delete (two-key). I don't do i...

Re: Another file just disappeared

Well, since I've been typing on different keyboards for more than thirty years and still am not a perfect typist like some of the petitioners-- and a Delete key is very much in a place where it accidentally gets hit sometimes, I'm thinking of a petition that requests a cmd-delete function, or at lea...

Re: Aeon Timeline Version 0.2.3 (Beta)

Matt, Nope, the end date was definitely after the start date. :) The process went: changed the date format from default 23/5/1999 style to 5/23/1999. Then start date August 23, 2007 and end date September 24, 2007. This would hang up the program so nothing else would happen (spinning beach ball/colo...
