Re: Having to close a document on one device before opening it on another — why?

Scrivener saves to Dropbox automatically every few seconds, so what could go wrong? [...] On device A, the project is still open. Scrivener does not explicitly load mobile changes unless you tell it to (File -> Sync -> With Mobile Devices), and you forget to do that. [...] Alright, that's scary! I ...

Re: Dropbox and syncing

What could go right? It’s a recipe for work being overwritten and lost. Perhaps I failed to properly explain myself. If I have a document open on device 1, and it auto-saves every 2 seconds, even if the saving takes, say, another 4 seconds, I'd have to try really hard to mess things up. I'd have to...

Having to close a document on one device before opening it on another — why?

Dropbox syncing was never a problem for me when using my iMac and and iPad Pro, but having bought a new MacBook Pro (2019, it arrived today) it seems I now must make sure to quit Scrivener on one device (or at least close the document) before attempting to work on it on the other device. Is this cor...

That's wonderful. May I, at some point, take the liberty to remind you, if needed? I did try to do it on my own, but soon gave up. Hegel is easier for a mind like mine 8)

Re: Layout challenge — is what I want possible without scary LaTeX?

Yes, starting from scratch this may seem quite daunting... — from my perspective it is fairly straight-forward plumbing, but I just can't guarantee any time spend on this. Of course, I understand. There is no hurry — my dissertation is due in a little less than three years. If you should ge...

Re: Layout challenge — is what I want possible without scary LaTeX?

I'm short on time, but off the top of my head, you could use Scrivener > Pandoc > Tufte [...] If I get a spare weekend I'd be up form merging the LaTeX template into scrivomatic, but my free weekends are few and far between... Thanks a lot. The Tufte sidenotes are exactly what I want. I'm somewhat ...

Layout challenge — is what I want possible without scary LaTeX?

Having switched from LyX (LaTeX with a graphic user interface) to Scrivener and never wanting to go back, I would like to adapt the Non-Fiction Manuscript template that I use with some adjustments, for my dissertation, in one important way, and I wonder if this can be done without overly complicatin...

My low-tech approach

For what it's worth I'll share my low-tech approach here. Sometimes an integrated, technology-dependent, automated solution is not needed (I also add citations and references to my dissertation by hand, like people did for centuries). In collaborating with my PhD supervisor, too, I found that simple...

Re: Music for writing

I’ve been experimenting with generated sound instead of music. There is a good selection of tracks at https://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/isochronicBrainwaveGenerator.php, and you can adapt and combine them.

Hi Keith,
I tried, but I can't reproduce it either. Even in the original document the error is now gone.

Re: After a year of using Scrivener, I regret to say I'm moving back to Word... (Zotero and Antidote)

[...] Every academic writer uses a reference manager like Zotero [...] Not so. I'm entering citations and reference entries by hand. It's how people did it for a long, long time. Excellent books were prepared that way. You have to learn the ins and outs of the chosen citation style, of course. And ...

Minor bug: snapshots

Nothing serious, let's call it a buglet.

In a snapshot, those words in a French language blockquote that contain diacritical marks are all marked as having changed when they haven't. See screenshot.

Re: I'd like to see style attributes included in replace operations

I occasionally do wish that I could apply a style on the replacement (especially since I want to do a mass replacement of custom styles with other custom styles), but I feel that my needs are an edge-case. Also, poor planning on my part... so I haven't asked for it, and plan to use Keyboard Maestro...

Re: Overwriting earlier compiled output

This is the way it works on a Mac. Having a new saved copy of every compilation could result in a huge number of almost identical copies so that wouldn't be very nice. Having to click an extra Ok isn't that much work. It would be a user preference. If the user fears huge numbers of copies, they can...
