Re: Today's Scrivener newsletter & Tinderbox

It's not my intention to convince anyone they should buy Tinderbox; I want to make this clear up front. However, it is a really remarkable application and I just want to make sure that anyone giving up on Tinderbox have a good idea about what it is they are abandoning. If you haven't seen them alrea...

Re: Two FileMaker Half-price Offers

The biggest issue I had with Bento was that it didn't include the ability to print labels -- but the latest version has added this function. Other than that, I've found it to be pretty easy and straight forward. The set of form designs leaves much to be desired -- primarily relating to the lack of c...

Re: Two FileMaker Half-price Offers

Thanks for letting us know about this offer. I need to buy a copy of the Windows version of FileMaker for the nonprofit organization I volunteer for and this will save us a little money.

BTW, I use Bento on my MacBook and am very happy with it. I wish there was a version for Windows.

Re: Today's Scrivener newsletter & Tinderbox

For someone who wants to learn how to survive the shallow end of Tinderbox first, would Eastgate's related offering, Twig, serve as a good beginner's course? It would probably help. Twig has a nice note-finder-builder front end that makes searching a little easier. It dispenses with several views, ...

Re: Today's Scrivener newsletter & Tinderbox

Katherine, Agents are not as difficult as they may at first seem. The complexity (in my view) comes when you start needing to make sophisticated regular expressions to winnow out the data. Here's a screen shot describing how to create a simple agent that searches a key attribute called "project...

Re: Today's Scrivener newsletter & Tinderbox

There is no lack of documentation for Tinderbox, though some of it needs updating. I think the real problem is that the applications one can use Tinderbox for are so customizable as to make it very difficult to create a "how to" type manual. As an exaggerated analogy, it is somewhat like e...

Re: Nisus Writer Pro 2 is released

I sympathize and tend to agree (at least in principle) with Eddie. A software developer (or anyone selling a product) has an obligation to see that his product works as advertised. If the application does not, it is unfair to require customers to pay a new fee to get a fixed version. After all, in t...

Re: "TheBoard" - feedback wanted on simple brainstorming app

Nice application, Keith. One thing I'd like to see is the ability to create a tabular structure with rows and columns. This would be a handy way to add some structure to the notes created after "boardstorming." Then the notes could be exported as either children of the column headings or t...

If you write about China, make sure it's the table-setting and not the country. There's been a lot on the country in recent posts.

Keith guest blogging for James Fallows

Hello,

I apologize if this is already common knowledge here, but I just noticed that James Fallows announced that Keith Blount will be one of the guest bloggers this week, filling in for James on his Atlantic Monthly blog, which you can find here:

(10) Let STATES decide on issues such as Gay marriage, drug laws, etc. The federal government needs to stop trying to be big mother and put more power back to each state. That way people with common views can live in states with other people with common views and cut out the "trying to make ev...

Re: I'm confused about this update pricing

So... because I bought in early, I now get punished by having to pay for the update, while everyone who bought it later just gets it for free? That's normally the opposite of a good business practice. The general plan is to reward people you hop in early, not make them shell out extra cash. Scriven...

Re: Dear Sarah

Don't worry. Sarah Palin isn't going to run for president -- at least not seriously. Being a loose canon is much more lucrative than being president. Oh, she'll get into the primary in order to get all the face time she can, then she'll invent some excuse -- the liberal media or something -- to bail...

Re: Note Blizzard

PS: Tinderbox - still playing around with it. The learning curve reminds me of L'Alpe d'Huez! You have to figure everything out from the bottom. For instance, how do I make a flattened map view of a deep hierarchical structure of notes? I have a feeling it might be possible - but also that it would...
