Re: Poll: Product activation in the garden of good and evil

The interesting result will be to see if you see an increase in purchases from this. I have this feeling that anyone who uses pirated software never would pay for it in the first place, so pirated copies in use do not necessarily translate into lost revenue. Nevertheless, it disgusts me that people ...

Re: What else is on your Mac?

Almost better to ask what's NOT on my MacBook! Because it would be too embarrasing to provide a total list, I'm going to edit it to those applications that I actually use on a regular basis (and have bought a license for -- there are several apps that I've trialed and haven't bothered to remove yet)...

Re: Ulysses reborn

Bobsham, I agree with you about the semantic editing in Ulysses. I can see how it can make a difference once the writing is done, but it doesn't seem to me to have any advantage during the writing process. I am, however, intrigued by a plain text editor. I often find myself writing in Notetab for Wi...

Re: Movie Grades and/or Reviews (MAK)

I'm sorry I don't have time to respond to this more fully, but I disagree. Film can be art. You are essentially saying that painting cannot be an art because of "doctor's office art"; or that music cannot be an art because of elevator music. The existence of pop/pulp in a form of expressi...

Re: Movie Grades and/or Reviews (MAK)

Most movies are NOT art. They are commercial entertainment and the people involved with making them have no interest beyond the paycheck. That we should or should not review Transformers with the same sensibilities or methods we would use to examine a painting by Manet is a discussion that doesn't e...

Re: Problems with Mail

Kendric, Thank you for the information about Archive and Re-install. I will try that before heading to my vendor -- correct, he is not an Apple Store. We do not have one of those in Vermont, but my dealer has been selling Macs for over 20 years, so I hope he knows what he's doing! Thanks, aga...

Re: Problems with Mail

Once more, thank you for the advice. I tried fixing this by downloading and installing the combo update, but it won't work. I think the permissions on my hard drive are messed up and the repair permissions function returns an error too. I think I'm going to have to throw up my hands and take the com...

Amber and Kendric,

Thank you for your responses. Still a mystery as to what the problem is.

Re: Problems with Mail

Kendric, Thank you for the response. I tried running the mail updater, but as I was going through the process it said this: "You cannot install Mail Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." This doesn't bode well, does it? All the other software I...

Problems with Mail

Hi, all, Sorry to bother you with this support question, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My Mac upgraded to the latest OSX version this morning, 10.5.8, and now when I try to run Mail, I get a message that says: "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with th...

Re: Battlestar Galactica

I am doubtless the only person on this planet, let alone this forum, who had to go to Wikipedia to learn what exactly BG is. Or rather, was. My idea of a great television series is something like Pennies from Heaven or The Singing Detective. I know how popular sci-fi is with a good many of the memb...

Re: Battlestar Galactica

Keith, Thank you for the thoughtful response. I needed to get some of my feelings about BSG off my chest, and to have some feedback from another viewer. Your point about the writers forcing the mysteries on us is a good one. I hadn't really thought about it like that and you are right. It seems they...

Re: Battlestar Galactica

SPOILER ALERT Okay, I don't want to open old wounds or anything, but my wife and I just finished watching the series finale last night. After sagging greatly during series 3, it picked up in series 4, which was, while perhaps overly bleak, still riveting. The whole Gaeta/Zarek mutiney arc was high d...

Re: Pat Conroy -- the real deal

I would second this recommendation. Prince of Tides is a powerful, compelling novel. If you saw the jellied movie adaptation directed by and starring Barbara Streisand, do not be misled. The book is far richer.

Re: Software Similar to Scrivner for OS X Panther

You can still get an older version of Journler that is supposed to work with Panther:

http://www.journler.com/download/index.php

Development of Journler may have ground to a halt, but that probably doesn't matter, as any application compatible with Panther has probably been abandoned or halted.
