Re: Regretting installing Ubuntu 11.10

Re: Kubuntu 11.10 I'm using Kubuntu 11.04, as you were previously, so I cannot test this directly. Did you install to /usr/local/LiteratureAnLatte, or use LD_LIBRARY_PATH to give libraries in the Scrivener directory precedence over the system libraries? Because 11.04 and Scrivener use the same Qt li...

Re: Linux - Is it worth it?

I guess the answer to "is it worth it?" depends largely on what features you use in Scrivener. I haven't used Scrivener for OS X since the 1.x days (around when I stopped using OS X), so my use of the Linux version of Scrivener is pretty much limited to 1.x features. In addition, I do most...

Re: Linux on PowerPC

Only under an emulator. Scrivener is compiled for x86 (not even amd64): bash# file /usr/local/LiteratureAndLatte/bin/Scrivener /usr/local/LiteratureAndLatte/bin/Scrivener: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, not strip...

Against Reading

There's an old article in the New Yorker in which Caleb Crain takes a good look at the difference between readers and non-readers: http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/atlarge/2007/12/24/071224crat_atlarge_crain?currentPage=all A bit long on the history of reading, but the middle gets pretty intere...

Re: undefined symbol: _ZN11QWebArchive16staticMetaObjectE

Your setup looks fine and ldd is reporting correct linkage, so this is a bit odd. What happens if you do this on the command line? bash$ cd /usr/local/LiteratureAndLatte bash$ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./lib bin/Scrivener Does Scrivener work? If so, then there's a problem with the shell script you are using a...

Re: Delay when typing in main window

Are you using a compositing window manager (e.g. something like Compiz, or GNOME/KDE with 'Desktop Effects' enabled)? If so, try disabling compositing and see if that helps. I've had the same thing happen with isolated applications (e.g. rxvt-unicode but not konsole) when the Composite module was lo...

Re: undefined symbol: _ZN11QWebArchive16staticMetaObjectE

You know, it might not be a bad idea to make an install.sh script that prompts for an install location (defaulting to /usr/local), then creates the wrapper shell script (e.g. in /usr/local/bin) and the .desktop file (in /usr/share).

Re: undefined symbol: _ZN11QWebArchive16staticMetaObjectE

Yeah, the ldd command on the wiki doesn't need sudo and isn't really part of the install process - it is only for debugging. No idea why it's in that list of steps. I didn't realise that Scrivener ships with its own copies of the libraries it needs. I did the following: sudo cp -r /usr/local/Literat...

Re: Running Scrivener on Linux

Another fun tip: if you have KDE installed, you can run .desktop files from the command line using kioclient.

Example:

Code: Select all

kioclient exec file:/usr/local/LiteratureAndLatte/Scrivener.desktop

Re: undefined symbol: _ZN11QWebArchive16staticMetaObjectE

This means that you are missing the Qt4 WebKit library.

On Ubuntu, this can be installed with the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libqtwebkit4

Re: Raw Shark Texts

Push this to the top of your Queue. Actually, I read it shortly after posting -- had forgotten it was sitting there in my to-read stack. Quite enjoyable. The petty backstabbing and the obstinate pursuit of one's own agenda is pretty widespread in academia. Regarding Eggers and such, the writing in ...

Re: Text not showing b29

No problems here (Kubuntu 11.04). bash$ dpkg -l | grep libqtcore ii libqtcore4 4:4.7.2-0ubuntu6.2 Have you tried running this in another window manager to see if it is KDE mucking things up? For example (using fluxbox): Ctrl-Alt-F1 (to get to a console) login bash$ xinit `which fluxbox` -- :1 # when...

Re: Raw Shark Texts

House of Leaves: Greatly enjoyed that one. Only Revolutions: Not so much; I think around 70 pages in (from each direction) I said "Why bother?" and haven't picked it up since. Raw Shark Texts: I like it a lot for the bulk of the book, but the extended Jaws re-telling towards the end really...

Re: Which Linux distro do you use for Scrivener?

Ubuntu 11.04 amd64. Window manager: E17. Finally doing work in Scrivener again after giving OS X (and Macs) the boot a year or so ago, and it feels great. Install was pretty straightforward: sudo tar zxf Scrivener-029-Package.tgz -C/usr/local sudo ln -s ~/bin/kindlegen /usr/local/LiteratureAndLatte/...
