Re: low tech uses for high tech tools

I used my cell phone to light my way to my emergency candles last week when we had a (blessedly brief) power failure.

My cats have attacked our computer mice, too. Now, however, they've moved on to hunting down the iPod earbuds.

Re: Why do some people write best at night?

The absence of distractions is probably a huge part of it. Here's one way of figuring out whether it's the peacefulness of the small hours of the night, versus a natural tendency to work best at night: When you're on vacation, and you lack the usual distractions, do you still tend to stay up until 3...

Re: Why do some people write best at night?

It sounds like you're a "night owl," or one of those nocturnal people whose creative juices flow when the sun goes down. My husband and my mother are like that.

Re: This is exactly the typewriter I started to type on

Wow, does that photo of the Olivetti bring back memories! I began writing on my mother's old 1960s-era Smith-Corona portable typewriter back when I was a teenager, and I can't count how many high school and college research papers I typed on that thing. I still love a good typewriter. (In fact, I wa...

Re: English - why I hate Americans

Also deeply ingrained into the American psyche is a disturbing willingness to accept bullshit over truth, when that bullshit fits comfortably within one's own preconceived notions. Remember, we're the descendants of people who immigrated here because they believed that the streets of America were li...

Re: Google autocomplete (get those strawberries off my nipples!)

Oh, these are hilarious! Thanks for sharing!

And you know, after we here in the States gorged ourselves on Thanksgiving turkey and multifarious variations of "the trimmings," rice, beans, and pork chops don't sound too bad!

Unfortunately, enough people fall for this kind of craziness to make phishing lucrative. If not, phishing would have died out long ago.

Re: English - why I hate Americans

I totally agree with that - and even more interesting is how they vary - it's not like a graduated scale of accent from north to south, there are some places where the differences make really no sense at all! Some area seem to be like isolated alien landing sites. Wow! It's the same over here! Ther...

Re: English - why I hate Americans

Whoa, guys! I thought it impressive that in the span of 32 miles, you'd have lots of different dialects! I've been fascinated by linguistics for some time, and I just thought that such a veritable cornucopia of variations was really interesting.

Re: English - why I hate Americans

Amen! Homogeneity may be comforting and convenient, but variation can be interesting. Plus, it can be awfully funny! I've probably told this story before, so if you've already heard it, just ignore the rest of this post. Before I was a lawyer, I worked as a newspaper editor in a little town about 50...
