Re: Writing a novel with Scrivener - David Hewson's new ebook

For anyone thinking of going down the epub route here are my reasons for not being on iBooks. Wish it were otherwise but it ain't as far as I can see...

Re: e-book with or without DRM

Given that everything that goes to ebook, drm or not, gets ripped off, cracked and uploaded to the torrents as everything from mobi to pdf I don't think there's any great worry about losing stuff. As long as Amazon's around Kindle books will clearly be fine. I don't think you can really compare the ...

Re: Writing a novel with Scrivener - David Hewson's new ebook

Vic - 'Sister Thingie', who I know as Agata Graziano, reappears in a big way in the new book The Fallen Angel. She's not the sort of woman to stay away.

Re: Writing a novel with Scrivener - David Hewson's new ebook

Thank you! Trust me - if I could get it on iBooks easily I would. But it's a nightmare. I must blog on this at some stage because there's a lot to say. Kindle is so very easy once you've set up an Amazon account and given them your US Tax Identification Number (which I had already). I uploaded the b...

Re: Writing a novel with Scrivener - David Hewson's new ebook

No sorry. It's not practical to publish directly to iBooks from the UK. I'd need to buy a pointless and very expensive US ISBN for one thing. And if I used Smashwords I'd have to reformat the entire thing as a coded Word doc. Ibooks looks very unattractive from here

Re: e-book with or without DRM

One last time.... As you note, I can buy a paper book at retail from anywhere in the world and have it shipped to Australia. However, I cannot do the same with e-books because of DRM It's nothing to do with DRM. It's to do with rights. Even if an ebook retailer didn't use DRM he couldn't offer those...

Re: e-book with or without DRM

However, I can buy a paper book from anywhere in the world, but not so with ebooks because DRM restrictions will not allow it. Sorry but you don't understand territorial rights. If from Australia you buy a paperback from a UK retailer who ships it to you in Australia that's fine with UK rights beca...

Writing a novel with Scrivener - David Hewson's new ebook

A lot of people seem to find the blog posts I’ve written about using Scrivener for my novels useful. Unfortunately as blog posts they become horribly disconnected over the years and naturally aren’t written in any logical order. So after lots of requests I’ve put together an ebook about how I use Sc...

Re: e-book with or without DRM

The other problem I have with DRM is that sometimes I will search for a book I want, find it a reasonable price, then discover that either (a) it is not available in Australia or (b) it is not available in a format I can use on my iOS device (I'm looking at you Adobe!). This is absolutely nothing t...

Re: e-book with or without DRM

I'd just back up Hugh's comments here... I've never met an ordinary reader who cares one whit about DRM on Kindle. Only people obsessed with their 'rights', most of which affect the rights of writers to earn a living from their work. Kindle DRM is extremely mild. It's not like the old iTunes one whe...

Re: Can doc format be added to sync?

Ah. Didn't know it was paragraph level. That means text only isn't such a big deal. Thanks!

Re: Can doc format be added to sync?

Ah... I don't really understand these subtleties. But you are right. I just exported to a doc file from Scrivener. DTG on iPad refused to open on it because it said it was an rtf file not a doc one. It suggested I convert to rtf which it then refused to open too. QuickOffice will open the file but i...

Can doc format be added to sync?

Sync is a wonderful idea but it fails for me for a very simple reason - I need to deal in rich text not simple text. Sync works fine if the thing you're sinking with is Windows for example. But if it's an iPad or Android tablet you're stuck with plain text. None of the word processing packages for t...

No really - it's not a big deal. I'm sure you've got more important things to work on.
