Writing in the Age of Distraction

If, like me, you occasionally find yourself struggling to keep away from the internet when you should be writing, here's a really well thought out set of rules from prolific blogger, journalist, and author Cory Doctorow.

Re: Export to .txt problem: sufficient gets suf?cient

In typography these fl and fi characters are called ligatures and are often substituted because they're visually better spaced. I would assume that somewhere along the line your word processor has replaced fl and fi with new ascii characters that aren't available in the fonts you're using. To my kno...

Re: Scriptwriting: [enter] on a blank line.

Haha the screenwriters do seem to be the bane of Keith's existence at times  For what it's worth you've done an exceptional job on this over the years and I for one could hardly be happier with the latest toys - page layout, FDX integration, splitting on import and the rest - it's all magnific...

Re: Import file created in 1.54, lose script formatting

I have the same thing, also using the Screenplay setting. I wondered if it could be to do with the global Page Setup margin settings conflicting with the Screenwriting>Script Setting? There also seems to be some inconsistency between the fonts Courier and Courier Final Draft but that might just be s...

Re: Importing video

Grab some software called MPEG Streamclip, show it the URL you just posted that has the video in it, then convert the video to an H.264 mpeg file or whatever video format you like best. Believe it or not it's much easier than I just made it sound. Of course if any of this is illegal where you live t...

Re: Exporting a Euro symbol to Final Draft

In case anyone is interested; it appears the weirdness is an Apple quirk. Here's the FD tech reply: Hi Robin, We've discovered that it works on Mac OS 10.5.5 and below, but since Mac has updated their OS, this function is no longer operable. We have referred this to engineering. Joe So... let's see ...

Exporting a Euro symbol to Final Draft

Hi I wonder if anyone can help. Despite me thinking everything was robust with the new Scrivener - Final Draft 8 integration I have found a potentially serious issue - the Euro symbol works fine in Scrivener (even using the Courier Final Draft font bizarrely) but when it imports to Final Draft the s...

That's got to be the most arrogant and ignorant thing I've heard anyone say all week. I'm not even going to trouble you with my credentials or any further response. Good luck with your agency.

Re: Question for Screenwriters

I used an 80 page script I had handy and tweaked the words per paperback page figures until they came out to within 3% of the correct value. Any variation between pages at finer granularity (such as 2.5 page sections) would presumably be more than overcome by judicious editing of a word or two per p...

Re: Question for Screenwriters

OK this is a total kluge but it works out pretty good - for my writing style and this screenplay at least. http://img.skitch.com/20090729-r52b9nmhi2cxduajmcmp49swc1.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20090729-833b9rmkc85k499acyhk5rq8ra.jpg Go by the Pages (paperback) number and tweak your words per page a li...

As Aeon Timeline forms the control interface for the first functional time machine we will inevitably notice more temporal glitches surrounding this topic as we approach the moment of singularity. Don't be alarmed.

That's awesome. I'm tempted to have a go at setting that up. Thanks for the instructions.

Re: Using Final Draft as a Scrivener printer driver

That's an interesting idea. In theory could one set Automator to watch a folder for .fdx files, then open them in Final Draft and print? I'm the last person to ask, since last time I tried Automator I wasted four hours of my life achieving nothing whatsoever and not even understanding where I was go...

Re: Scrivener for screenwriting?

There's a free open-source screenwriting app called Celtx http://celtx.com/ which does page layout and export. I played with it a while back and thought it wasn't quite ready yet, but it may very well have matured nicely.

Re: images stored sideways

I could be wrong but this sounds like it's to do with the EXIF metadata in the jpeg. Preview and some other apps read the EXIF and perform a rotation, and even allow you to save the file with the new rotation. BUT! they've only edited the EXIF data (in order to preserve detail and prevent degradatio...
