Re: Raw Shark Texts

Regarding Eggers and such, the writing in McSweeney's tends to rub me the wrong way. I'll definitely check out Vandermeer. I just read a short story of his, and it was pretty good. (It was in the anthology Feeling Very Strange ). I've actually never read an issue of McSweeney's (I have one, haven't...

Re: Looking for a good clip manager

I use Clips. It is kind of fancy, but I like it. The visual stuff makes it easier for me to use. I haven't noticed any significant slowdowns while using it, but I have a fairly new iMac.

Re: favorite todo list programs?

Oh, on the whole Moleskine thing: I love them, I really do. They're too expensive for me. I'm on a fixed income (I'm currently disabled, and will be for some time). I have found a reasonable substitute and that's Picadilly notebooks. The problem: They're hard to find in the store. Borders carried th...

Re: favorite todo list programs?

I currently use TaskPaper, and I like it. But I'm thinking of switching to todo.txt because I'm at the command line a lot anyhow. (I write in text files, and then use Scrivener to organize them. Using txt files allows me to use command line tools like grep, sed, awk etc which totally makes using txt...

Re: Writers App Promotion-Codes

And here are the codes no one claimed, so you don't have to go through the whole thread like I did. I just dropped the codes into a text editor and removed the ones people claimed. Re: currently reading

After years of not reading much outside of literary fiction, I'm suddenly on a Fantasy/Sci-Fi Kick. Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology edited by James Patrick Kelly Just finished Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale. Enjoyed it, despite its flaws. Hard to find good fantasy with realistic Gay ch...

Re: Raw Shark Texts

Pale Fire by Nabokov: OK, This is actually on my to-read stack, but the story is told incidentally, as it were -- through forewords, critical essays, and commentary on a poet's latest work. Puts me in mind of J G Ballard's short story The Index, where the "story" of a book is inferred fro...

Re: Raw Shark Texts

The People Of Paper by Plascencia: Very good, despite originally being published by the Eggers crew. May I ask what problem you have with the Eggers Crew? I assume you're referring to McSweeney's, which is really quite an interesting publishing house IMO. The Vandermeer stuff is already on my "...

Re: Raw Shark Texts

AmberV: Thanks. I've been looking at that for awhile. Not sure why I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. But I will now. KB: House of Leaves is worth every one of those 800 pages. And, some of those pages go by very quick with only a word or two on them. (Of course, other pages are incredibly dens...

Legend of a Suicide

I just started Legend of a Suicide by David Vann and I'm almost done. (One short story left). David Vann wrote these short stories in response to his father's suicide. I have to say: I highly recommend this to fans of short stories in general, and fans of literary short stories specifically. I will ...

Raw Shark Texts

I've just finished reading The Raw Shark Texts and absolutely loved it. I'd be keen on finding suggestions of other visual or ergodic literature. (I've already read House of Leaves and Only Revolutions by Mark Z. Danielewski and Filth by Irvine Welsh, so you don't have to suggest those, lol). Thanks...

Re: Dropbox alternatives?

I've recently been playing with ZumoDrive. It works a lot like dropbox, and it integrates nicely with OS X. You get 1 gig free, but they'll up that to 2 gigs if you go through the tutorial.
