Making the New Project window go away

I realize why the "Create a New Project/Open an Existing Project/ etc." dialog box automatically comes up when I start Scrivener, but is there a way to make it go away without quitting the app entirely? Is it now the case that if I want Scrivener running, I need to either have a project op...

Re: MacSpeech Dictate

I am eager to try the update, which does sound like a significant improvement. Unfortunately, I haven't be able to use Dictate in a couple of months. This could be due either to a malfunctioning microphone/USB adaptor or a weird new problem I've been having with Leopard in which my permissions keep ...

Re: Defineable keyboard shortcuts?

I didn't mean *your* instructions, Keith! I've never needed keyboard shortcuts with Scrivener, oddly enough. I'm thinking of books and somewhere in Apple's help menus.

Re: Defineable keyboard shortcuts?

Hey, thanks! That worked. I have to say all the instructions I've ever encountered on this have been really confusing and seemed to be insisting that I needed to add the whole menu path.

Re: Defineable keyboard shortcuts?

I know! The few times I've really committed to trying to make it work, I've tried it this way and that (spaces before and after the > symbol, then without them, etc.) for hours, endlessly relaunching the program each time to see if that helped, but no dice. (This is mostly with Mail. I believe I was...

Re: Defineable keyboard shortcuts?

You know, I have tried this several times with various programs -- including Apple's own, like Mail and iWork -- and have never been able to get it to work. I'm not sure what's wrong, but the shortcuts never seem to stick.

Re: Done and done

VoodooPad and other notebook software is useful in its own way, and I have used a couple of different notebook applications to store odds and ends, but what I'm thinking of (especially in terms of display) enables more of what I think of as "quote crunching." I think the problem with Voodo...

Done and done

Well, it's finally properly finished. I just sent corrected proofs back to my publisher, and the galleys arrived the very next day. It's a book! Coming out in December (US): http://www.amazon.com/Magicians-Book-Skeptics-Adventures-Narnia/dp/0316017639/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=121810824...

Re: Evernote Now in Public Beta

The tricky thing about all web apps for me is that in order to use them you have to be online. But in order to get any writing done I usually have to be *off* line.

Re: MacSpeech Dictate

I've just been using the program to dictate a few e-mails and web postings, including this one. (A stiff muscle in my shoulder has been acting up, and I'm trying to baby it.) I really haven't had that much trouble with switching between dictation and keyboard. Of course, I'm only dictating relativel...

Re: What slows a Mac down?

I once accidentally moved a bunch of files to my desktop while pottering around trying to figure out what had slowed my PowerBook down (turned out to be a bad hard drive). It was a nightmare that lasted all day.

So, I took m MBP into the Apple store and the guy there confirmed that the battery was bogus and gave me a new one. Thanks for the nudge, guys. I had pretty much decided I had to live with it...

Re: Fatal flaw for Pages to replace Word?

I've mostly migrated to Pages for my writing day job, since I deliver most of those pieces in the body of an email as it is. I've adjusted to almost everything but one peculiarity, which is that I can't seem to turn off what in Word is called "Page View": There seems to be no way to view a...

Re: MacSpeech Dictate

Update: I took McSD out for a serious spin for the first time yesterday, so I can deliver a more complete report now. It's not quite "there" in comparison to Dragon Naturally Speaking. The accuracy and word recognition are terrific -- many times I thought, as I was speaking, that I'd muffe...
