Re: suggestion : some kind of clue that a document is open in an external app

Why not use the Mac OS Mission Control function? It will show all open windows at once, much more quickly than you could scroll through the Binder looking for flags. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204100 Katherine If by mistake I save and close a project, and quit Scrivener before saving and clo...

Why not use the Mac OS Mission Control function? It will show all open windows at once, much more quickly than you could scroll through the Binder looking for flags. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204100 Katherine That works if you use only one virtual desktop. Otherwise, it shows windows connec...

Re: Add a plus sign to the drop down list for bullet points

You could probably use a Replacement to do this at Compile time.

Re: Scrivener users, where do you backup your files?

My husband recently found a disk image backup very handy when he had to revert a Big Sur installation back to Catalina. A friend was delighted to discover, after a catastrophic hard drive failure, that BackBlaze would mail her a physical drive with a complete archive of her data. I think the thing w...

Re: Scrivener users, where do you backup your files?

I first owned Scrivener on my Windows PC before transitioning over to the MacBook. I tried to open the Scrivener files I backed up onto Dropbox, but it wouldn't work. I'm assuming it might have to do with my second Scrivener being a Mac version - there was no solution I could find on the Internet f...

Re: Dropbox now saying illegal character in filename

What I would do: With Scrivener closed, make a backup, just in case. Browse to the project contents as you have done, and simply delete the problem files. They look like some sort of artifact, not essential parts of the project. Open the project in Scrivener and confirm that all is well. Katherine

What if you compile to another format, like PDF or RTF?

No true Englishman would use Websters! It's in Chambers, though, fyi :-)

Americans, of course, are required to pretend that no alternatives to Webster exist. :D

Re: Set title or first line to 2" from top

Set padding in the New Pages tab of the appropriate Section Layout.

See Section 24.2.5 in the Mac Scrivener manual for more information.

Re: Is there a way to set tab indent exactly in Scrivener3?

Format -> Paragraph -> Tabs and Indents to set exact numbers. Once you've formatted one paragraph to work the way you want, you can use the Project -> Project Settings -> Formatting pane to make it the default for this project, or Scrivener -> Scrivener Preferences -> Editing -> Formatting to make i...

Re: Wind your watch

I was a passenger once on a helicopter tour over the main crater on Kilauea, Hawaii. The pilot had been casually answering questions, pointing out the scientific instruments on the rim, and so on. Then he got really quiet. Maybe his jaw line tensed a little bit. I felt the slightest little bobble. T...

Re: iCloud Sync

A "perfect" synchronization service -- fast and reliable under all circumstances -- doesn't exist. And probably *can't* exist, given the structure of the internet as a whole. There was the time Dropbox flat out broke synchronization. There was the time an Apple bug caused unreliable synchr...

Re: password security

No. Because of the structure of a Scrivener project, merely locking the application would not deny access to your work. Anyone with unrestricted access to the computer can simply use Windows Explorer to browse directly to the individual files. If you need to secure your data, you should use one of t...

Re: Win3 view of Dropbox different to MacOS, cannot open/find same version of project

Please ensure that the Dropbox software is installed, running, and logged into your Dropbox account on both the Windows and Mac systems. Consult Dropbox support if you don't know how to do this. Then, create an ordinary text file on either device. Ensure that it successfully synchronizes to the othe...

Re: WORDS ARE KING to writers - THEY ARE OUR #1 PRIORITY!

What’s the point of using words that the reader doesn’t understand? I see your point and raise you Neal Stephenson's "Anathem." I've read it. The Glossary runs 20 pages, at about 10-12 words per page. So a few hundred words, not thousands. Most of which were sufficiently understandable fr...
