Re: Who overthinks?

The benefit I get from "pantsing" – I really dislike that word; there must be a better one – is the knowledge I gain about my characters. Whole sub-plots emerge from them without me doing any work, and said plots often bubble up into the main plot and become central. Sometimes it feels lik...

When a document was edited is of no importance at all to me, and even less so the relative order between many documents in a project.

Glad I'm not the only one.

Re: Search, Sort, and Navigate to Documents by Date Last Modified

Your requirement seems to be very specific – and you've specified it in great detail – but it's difficult to extract your need from your words. Could you perhaps specify your need succinctly, and then folk may be more inclined to assist? (Paragraphs would likely help, also.) I understand you want ev...

Re: How to Organise Fiction Project

You have two narrative (or story) arcs: one set in the past and one set in the present. At some point, the two arcs will be distributed throughout your project. At some point. When writing multiple arcs, whether character or narrative, I've found it far, far easier to separate the arcs while draftin...

Re: Find where I left off in a document

Like many folk, I use TODO: (with some text) and wrap it in an annotation. You can remove annotations (and comments) from a compile via Options.

In addition, it's handy to create a Collection for TODO:, which provides a convenient list.

Re: How can I display the text on top of the page while editing?

J'ai eu un jeu rapide. Is Typewriter Scrolling switched on? See View/Text Editing/<bottom item> or ctrl+cmd+T to toggle. You might also need the Preference: Typewriter scrolling always jumps to scroll line.

It's a bit of a maze of preferences and options, but I can make it work here.

You can switch on Typewriter Scrolling. See Preferences/Editing/Typewriter Scroll Line to adjust its position on the screen.

Re: Why do you use or want a Mac?

For me – and I'm a fairly recent convert [six years in Feb] – it started out being about ease of use; now, it's just as much about interoperability – a couple of MacBooks, an iPad, and an iPhone with everything sync'd (mostly). I love the fact that commands are universal: maximise, minimise, paste, ...

Re: Inciting Incident - how soon is too soon?

I now feel compelled to write something where the "Inciting Incident" is revealed in the final paragraph. Been done. Memento. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memento_(film) (Link has spoilers.) Heh, that's a coincidence. I erased a bit of text before posting where I alluded to committing to...

Mixing this with The Crying Game twist is starting to be a proper story.

Re: Inciting Incident - how soon is too soon?

If there's one thing I've learned about writing and writers, it's that no two are the same and what one writer considers inalienable fact is anathema to another. So, appeals to authority are vacuous, because there is no authority. Do whatever the story tells you. And, in my opinion. you can't possib...

Re: Is Windows Scrivener worth the jump from Mac?

$1,500? I've been using the base model of the new Air for a year now. It's ideal for Scrivener. I'm not in the US, but I see there are deals for the base model at $800, at the moment. I went the MBA route after considering an iPad for writing. Zero regrets. And I really like the machine itself. Wind...

Re: Simple word count, simplified

Looks like you're on an old version of Scrivener. There's a lot more data in Project Statistics these days.

I suspect the difference is because some files are have Include in Compile unchecked.
