Re: When to quit...?!

Advice I got from an author friend: always try to finish a draft. Even if it's not a good draft, the habit and mindset of "first finish the draft, THEN decide whether it's worth continuing" is better practice for the future. Well, it's great advice....Obviously, I know I should finish it....

Re: When to quit...?!

I'm actually wrestling with this now....I have a WiP that's been about 80% done for several years now...I know what I have to do to finish it ( At least I think I do.) but it keeps getting put off and off. I have to wonder now if it just needs to be thought of as great practice for the next bunch of...

Re: Live, write on a train....

When we first emigrated to Canada, my father decided that we should see the country we had moved to. So, we landed in Halifax, on the Atlantic ocean and boarded a train to Toronto, roughly a day and bit's travel to the west. From there we took a train non-stop to Vancouver, where we were to live......

Re: Where should writers live?

Weird question. I you're a writer you live in the writer's block. :) I hear that's a dead end street. Some local wag dubbed the area around McBurney Park "The Writer's Block" because of the number of prominent local writers who live near there. The park itself is fodder for stories and in...

Re: Who's in for Nano 2015?

Set it in your local neighbourhood, with various locals gradually succumbing to the zombie plague ("Oh no! There goes the greengrocer! Where will I get the eggplants for my moussaka?). You could even challenge yourself by incorporating an event from each day into the novel. Worst case scenario...

Re: Writing when you wake up in the middle of the night

If you often wake up in the wee hours of the night, unable to get back to sleep, you might want to read this Aeon article about segmented sleep and creativity. http://aeon.co/magazine/psychology/why-broken-sleep-is-a-golden-time-for-creativity/ The author has this to say: My own night-waking confir...

Re: Who's in for Nano 2015?

I'm going to give it a red hot go this year and really looking forward to it. Anyone else committing to the madness? :) This year my wife is pretty much demanding that I do it, in order to finish the novel I've been putzing about on since last year... Then she wants me to see about how to get it pu...

Re: Marshal Law (NiaD 2015)

My understanding is that the accent would have been more likely to an Irish/British than what we think of southwestern. For whites that is. Irish labor was heavy in the railroad construction and mining towns. The predominant language would have been Spanish and would have been more "glue langu...

Re: Novel-in-a-Day 5: Go Set A NiaD

Hey everyone just so you know... I'm still waiting for a small number of chapters (which I've been promised are due very very soon). So there's a chance the compilation will be delayed slightly (as I can't start until all the files are in). Will keep you posted. Hmmmmm.....*thinks of the revisions ...
