Re: Mojave / Scrivener 3.1 crash on startup

I have deleted the Preferences file, and Scrivener now launches. But when I enter my license details and click on Activate License, Scrivener again crashes. What might be the next step in trying to solve this issue?

Re: Mojave / Scrivener 3.1 crash on startup

I upgraded from Mojave to Catalina a few days ago and am now unable to launch Scrivener because of the same crash on startup as reported in this thread. I have reinstalled Scrivener, but to no avail. Is there really no solution apart from deleting the preferences file?

Spell checking

I have been going through my 32-bit applications to see what I can dispense with when I eventually move on from Mojave. I have installed a couple of indispensable ones on a Mojave virtual machine in Parallels, but one application for which this won’t work is Spell Catcher. So my question is: are the...

Re: Document Scanner Recommendations?

The default setting is 250 DPI, but it can be increased to 300 DPI. I have been using the default setting, which seems sufficient for my needs. I have an old version of Acrobat Pro 10, which fortunately still works on Mojave. By way of experiment, I just scanned something and created a searchable PD...

Re: Document Scanner Recommendations?

I actually bought a CZUR scanner (ET 16) after reading about it in one of the above posts, and I am reasonably happy with it. Scanning is fairly fast, and one feature that I find especially useful is that it can automatically convert a two-page scan into two separate pages. It can also produce OCRed...

Re: Update to 3.1.3 and license server switchover went flawlessly

Didn't work flawlessly here when updating from within Scrivener—I had to re-enter my licence information. Little Snitch also tells me that every time I start Scrivener, it wants to connect to Paddle. Is there a particular reason for this?

Re: Services not available with PDFs?

I had suspected that it may be more to do with the operating system than with Scrivener per se, so thanks for confirming that.

Services not available with PDFs?

In Scrivener 2 I was able to select a word in a PDF, press a keyboard shortcut assigned in the Services menu, and do useful things such as look the word up in the Dictionary app, search Google, and so on. But in Scrivener 3 this no longer seems possible. If I select a word in a PDF and open the Serv...

Re: User Dictionary for each project

Multiple user dictionaries are possible using Spell Catcher, but this may not be a viable option since it is regrettably no longer being developed (although it does still work in OS 10.9, and this is the main reason that I am sticking with 10.9 for as long as I can).

Re: Translating and scrivener?

The Logophile Web site is unfortunately only in Japanese: http://dicwizard.jp/logophile/ It is essentially a browser for electronic dictionaries and glossaries in a wide variety of formats which allows you to search multiple dictionary files simultaneously and instantaneously. You can arrange your d...

Re: Translating and scrivener?

I have been using Scrivener now for several years to produce draft translations. I have played around with several CAT programmes but have found that for the type of academic translations I do Scrivener is quite adequate. My use of Scrivener is fairly basic -- split-screen mode with the source text ...

Re: evaluation

The problem with language switching occurs in all applications using Apple's text engine. To get around this when working in Scrivener, when I want to switch to a different script I first type an extra space, move back one space with the left arrow, switch to the other script (and font), and when I ...

Re: Mellel 3.3

Mellel imports Japanese files exported from Scrivener as RTF without any problems, so I wonder why it can't handle Chinese (and Korean) files correctly. I just tested with some Chinese and Korean files, and they did indeed turn into gibberish, although of course one can type in Chinese and Korean in...

Re: Alternatives for SpellCatcher?

I can confirm that I too was pleasantly surprised to discover that SpellCatcher works in Mavericks (and I jumped from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and so was all the more concerned about what might no longer work).

Thanks for explaining that. It hadn't occurred to me to press cmd-shift-F again to add to the start of a footnote.
