Have you tried: TOOLS > OPTIONS > APPEARANCE > EDITOR > PAGE ? Click the white color chip, and choose a color you like. Hope that helps. I can identify with the blindingly white screen. I need something far more subdued. I mostly use the current beta, but this seems to work in the 1.9 version.

Try FILE > OPTIONS > APPEARANCE > OUTLINER. Then, you may find that "Remove bold from titles with no synopisis" is ticked "on" by default. Untick that, and you should find that your titles of all outliner items are bolded.
