Re: 50 Word Short Story Competition

I just posted A Brief Interlude in a Spring Affair Between Two (Partially) Deaf Lovers. BRILLIANT!!!!!!   (or is it sick? I'll have to think about that) I concur. I too, laughed out loud as I saw first place slip away! That mine was the only entry at the time is completely immateria...

Re: 50 Word Short Story Competition

Hi John, I've entered! Great idea, by the way. Here's my entry for what it's worth: I, Zebra I felt her breath on my neck and the game was up. Exhaustion overtook me as powerful jaws clamped themselves around my jugular vein, extinguishing my life slowly. Claws tore at my rump, spilling blood in one...

Re: Very First Attempt!

Ok, here's another excerpt from my novel....Working title: Severence Pay. Thorne and Brookes gathered behind the small desk in Dr Mountjoy’s office and waited with anticipation as the professor held the DVD between the thumb and forefinger of a latex-gloved hand and slid it into the DVD-ROM drive of...

Re: How many fiction writers do we have here?

Here's mine, for what it's worth:

Jane Morrison thought that life could not get any better until the day that Blade, her German Shepherd dog, dropped a severed, slightly decomposed human arm at her feet.

Crime Writing Workshop in Derby

Good morning fellow Scriveners! Just thought I'd share the fact that there is a Crime Writing Workshop being held on 19th May 2012 at Derby Central Library. http://www.derby.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/libraries/library-events/a-man-comes-into-the-room-with-a-gun-zoe-sharp/ Book early to avoid disapp...

Re: currently reading

Halfway through Taunting the Dead by Mel Sharratt. It's a dead good read, pardon the utterly unforgiveable pun.

Re: 750 is better than -0-

I've completed the first 10,000 words of my first draft! Yippee!! :-)
It might not be any good, but it's about 9000 more words than I've ever managed previously.
Here's to the next 50,000 :D and then onto the editing

Re: 750 is better than -0-

I'm currently trying to write the first draft of my very first novel and have set myself a daily word count of 1000 words. Just finished writing for an hour and managed to get 1080 words down on the page. That's a total now of 3955. Every little helps! Onwards and upwards. I've actually written down...

Re: Who's a writer ?

I had an article extolling the virtues of businesses employing real-life receptionists to answer their telephones (as opposed to automated, robotic, answering machines) published in The Lady once. Does that count!? :-)

Re: Shogun

I highly recommend it KB. The way that Blackthorne becomes more and more immersed into the Japanese culture as the book progresses is fantastic, and in Toranaga, you have one of my favourite characters in literature anywhere! (along with Jack Reacher!!) :-)

Re: Very First Attempt!

No it wasn't. If these were the first words written for the first draft of your first attempt, then you should be really encouraged. Thank you pigfender. I am encouraged and have ploughed on to write a couple of scenes of chapter one. I think that I'm going to be a "get it all down on paper an...

Re: Very First Attempt!

Thank you both for your very kind welcome, I'm so looking forward to the journey (is the J word allowed here?), through the trials and, no doubt many, tribulations along the rocky road of creating my first novel. I promise to not succumb to any more cliche-ridden text than those I have just used! Th...
