Re: Scrivener 3 Crashing After macOS 10.15.4 Update

I haven't specifically had problems with Scrivener, but I held off upgrading to Catalina for a long time, then when I did I pretty soon rolled back to Mojave. I think this is the first time I have rolled back an OS upgrade since I started using Macs in about 1993. I found iCloud was pretty bad (slow...

Re: Reference Manager

At the moment I use Bookends. As always, there are advantages and disadvantages with any solution. Over the years I have come to realise that any recommendation that a person can give will tell you as much about them, the work they do, and the way they like to do it, as it does about the program or ...

Re: Reference Manager

I'm just another customer, so I have no inside information, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this. This idea has come up at various times over many years and the response has always been that it is outside the scope of the program. Having used bibliographic database software since the 1990s...

Re: Definitions

My approach to this would be to use the Notes pane. That way you could have the definitions beside the main text you are working on. This is what I usually do when I want to have something to refer to while I am writing. Of course, you can also use split screen and have a reference in one editing pa...

Actually, this is yet another example of the False Consensus Effect https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_consensus_effect. Never fails to amaze me how common it is on the Internet.

Re: Scriv 3 hanging continually

Sounds like you are using Windows. Well, the OP states he is using a Mac and a MacBook, so I'm not sure how that conclusion was arrived at. However, it would not harm anything to try a utility like Onyx https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html to see if there is any underlying problem with the...

Re: educational videos academic use

There isn't really very much to learn about "integration", in my view. I used Scrivener 2 and Bookends to write a PhD thesis of around 85,000 words. The major work involves finding the references and entering them into whatever bibliographic manager you choose. It never seems to be an easy...

Re: Scrivener Support for Reference Managers (Zotero, Endnote, Mendeley, etc)

When I wrote my PhD thesis (85,000 words) I used Scrivener 2 for Mac and Bookends, using temporary citations. I then compiled to RTF and scanned the file to insert the in-text citations and create the bibliography. The last phase took about five minutes. I'd recommend looking at Zotero's support pag...

Re: Dropbox sync is too restrictive - any other option, even iCloud??

Given the problems I've had with iCloud recently (Apple seems to have done something nasty to it in October on the release of Catalina) I wouldn't use it if it were available. Taking several hours to upload a 7 KB file? No thank you. I have spent the past two days moving as much as I can from iCloud...

Re: iCloud oddities

At the moment, iCloud is looking as magical as five o'clock on a winter's morning in Harlow. (Apologies to those who don't know Essex -- and apologies to those who live in Harlow, but well, you know ...) For the past hour and more, iCloud has been telling me that it is uploading 1Kb of 7Kb. Reminder...

iCloud oddities

Various people have written on these forums about trouble with synchronisation, so I thought I would add to the list, perhaps as a kind of "watch out for this". Apple seems to have done something to iCloud (apparently in the run-up to releasing Catalina) which has made it much less reliabl...

Re: Typing Lag

You might find it instructive to keep Activity Monitor running, and keep an eye on what is using up CPU or Memory, or whatever. I use iStat Menus ( https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/ ) and note that sometimes the whole computer stops while something gobbles all the processing power (though it doesn'...

Re: Typing Lag

My first response to "mysterious" problems is usually to run a utility like Onyx ( https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html ) to clear out all caches, repair anything that needs repairing, delete the Spotlight index and so forth. It doesn't always help, but at least I know that I've c...

Re: File from Trial Version

It sounds as if you have downloaded the application a second time. You don't normally need to do this. Usually you just put your registration details in the trial version and it becomes licensed. If you have two versions of the application on your hard drive, it is best to get rid of one of them.
