I have to clarify that when trying to start Scrivener the application is not listed in the Apps list of Task Manager but in the background processes list of Task Manager.

It is possible to recover data from a crashed HDD. I don't know how important the data is for you, but it's an option. There are software tools, but they can damage the drive even more. And there also exist specialised companies that are able to recover the data, but they aren't cheap.
DTP seems like the tool I'm looking for, unfortunately there is no real Windows equivalent. I think it's going to far to make the switch to mac for only one application.

Just install Ghostscript. Next in preferences, under the section "external tools", you have to tell scribus where gs is installed. (in the terminal you get the path through the command `which gs`) I hope this helps, I am not a mac user but found this in a forum.
