Good news. I just created a simplified file for a different project, this time just putting the manuscript files in and using the default novel template instead of my own.
I then deleted and redownloaded Scrivener app on iPad so could start again and this time it worked!

Thank you so much for answering, especially in a holiday period. I looked again in the Scrivener and the files section and nothing there so am going to do what Katherine suggests. So helpful. Thanks. Will let you know how it goes.

I thought that iOS opened from the back ups so I synced my zipped back up files to Scrivener when the Dropbox dialogue came up when I tried to do an initial sync while setting up Scrivener on my iPad. Thanks, Amber - I think in my case there shouldn't be too many problems as I'm writing straightforward fiction with no footnotes or styles applied. The PWA version of the .scriv file doesn't show words in italics or bold - but it doesn't seem to interfere with them either, so that's the only differe...

Ok - thanks so much for this input. I have gone ahead and purchased as I was impressed when I trialled it and I'm not using footnotes or any complex formatting. I will make sure i open the whole project so it shows the binder in order to edit each scene and then make sure i save it in Dropbox again ...

Just had to do this again, worked again - think it might be due to the random way my stupid laptop crashes sometimes. It's also helped others over on the Scrivener Users group - so just bumping for visibility and to thank JimRac again!

Yay - Jim - thanks for all the help!! That very simple fix worked perfectly. Funnily enough I'd thought of doing that but hadn't because I didn't want it to start stalling again. I guess my laptop crashing must have interrupted/disrupted the saving process.

I have followed your advice and saved to a local folder and that's behaving normally. I can then manually copy and paste that file and upload it to Dropbox -...

I did both of those and it behaved the same way, sadly - screenshot attached in case I've missed something...thanks though.
