Re: If the Internet disappears

Yes, it's still true that you can transfer projects to/from an iOS device via Apple file sharing. Having extra backups is never a bad idea, regardless of the state of the internet and/or civilization. Katherine You could also take a look at iMazing (Mac & PC) which makes file transfers really e...

Re: Sidebar link to external folder

Have you looked at the Import Research Files as Aliases function? Katherine Yes Katherine I did check that, but AFAICT it works with individual files and not folders. I'm looking for something that will give me an alias to a folder; in effect a replication of the bookmark behaviour but accessed fro...

Sidebar link to external folder

How can I create a link in the sidebar to an external folder rather than to individual files. The logic of putting it in the sidebar is that it would be in the Research folder along with any other research stuff, rather than in the Inspector. I can use bookmarks in the Inspector, but I would prefer ...

Re: Sidebar Icons

That's not what Keith said. The "Body Text 1" document *itself* contains text. ........ See Section 7.1 in the manual for a complete list of Binder icons and their meanings. Katherine Thanks Katherine, that's cleared it up. I was misreading it as an indication that the folder contained te...

Re: Sidebar Icons

That icon means that the folder itself has text in it - it's nothing to do with the subdocuments...... Keith That's what I meant Keith. Although both folders have documents in them, the Intro folder displays a different icon to the BODY TEXT 1 folder, regardless of whether it's open or closed. Sure...

Sidebar Icons

Why is it that one folder in the sidebar which contains severa l items of text (BODY TEXT 1) has a small indication that it contains items whilst the other folder (Intro) doesn't? Even when I close the latter the indication that it contains items isn't there. I've tried creating a new folder and mov...

Re: Scrivener Support for Reference Managers (Zotero, Endnote, Mendeley, etc)

I've been using Scrivener for academic work since around 2008 and will admit that citations and footnoting back them was far from one of its strengths. I got round it by pasting formatted citations - from Bookends - within the body text and then after compilation used a couple of Nisus macros to cle...

Re: sync,com?

I suspect it of potentially being slightly slower than Dropbox—though nowhere nearly as flaky as iCloud. Certainly, we have had more conflicts than with Dropbox, though that's probably somewhat less than 2 per year, and very likely actually the usual problem of being too hasty. Mark That's been my ...

More on Sync

There's an interesting post on the Omni Blog here: https://www.omnigroup.com/blog/flat-file-format-a-new-enhancement-for-sync-service-compatibility From that it's worth noting that Omni, who are highly experience Mac developers have also been having problems getting reliable syncing with one of their...

Re: Alternatives to Dropbox?

I read it that the Sync people are saying, "We’re not actually interested in working with multi-file projects like Scrivener, so we'll say it’s not suitable because then punters have been warned and if they get into difficulties they can’t come running to us for assistance." I’m pretty su...

Re: Alternatives to Dropbox?

I use Sync (sync.com) to share projects with my collaborator in China, where Dropbox is blocked and Box is not available. The bods at Sync say it is not suitable for Scrivener projects, but we've been using it for about 5 years with very few problems. Occasionally we've had conflicted files, but th...

Re: Link to File 'greyed out'

I think it's greyed out because that function is to insert a link to a file in a text document. Not into the Binder. For importing the PDFs you can got to File ▸ Import ▸ Research Files as Aliases.., which will do what you want - keep the file size down - without having to make the aliases first. S...

Link to File 'greyed out'

I've been trying to link to some some rather large pdf files, but under the Scriv 'edit' menu, link to file is 'greyed out'. The options offered are only to link within the Scrivener project itself rather than to external files or folders which is what I want to do in order to keep the project size ...

Re: Syncing Scrivener Across Devices

I work regularly with my colleague in China … I'm on Mac, she's on Windows. We use Sync, as Dropbox is blocked in China, and Sync requires a little more care than Dropbox in terms of making sure all uploads and downloads are complete before opening a project or closing the computer....... Mark Have...

Re: Dropbox introduces three-device limit on free accounts

Maybe all of these people who are willing to throw money at KB to solve technical limitations that are not of his making and that he has no control over might be willing to do some of the legwork to research other alternatives *in depth* and find out if any of them have significantly changed so tha...
