Scrivener allows you to edit two documents side-by side, split either horizontally or vertically. All of the formatting features of TextEdit are available, along with the ability to highlight text, define footnotes and annotations and resize inline images. Scrivener's Edit Scrivenings feature also allows you to view several arbitrary individual documents as though they were a single document:
