I have written to you several times because my recently acquired software "Scrivener for Windows" did not work properly. The error lies in the falling of video files within Srivener. The video is played the first time, but a second or third video is no longer played, even the first video is not played the second time. only the sound is played. I would be glad, if somebody would finally get in touch.

Friendly greetings from Germany:

Mine won't either. I installed Scrivener--was forced to install Trial Version even though I bought the damn thing--which I am already regretting. I've tried to find help--2 days before I can get a reply per "no replay" automated email. I bought this thing to save time--not waste it going around and around. When I try to play the recommended "Interactive Tutorial" I get a message to "save," but when I try to "Save" I get a message "file not found" DUH!!! That because I'm trying to SAVE it. I'm technically challenged at best, but I'm not stupid. This POS program isn't working. Now, I've spent $45 and 2 hours trying to get something to work that obviously doesn't. WHERE IS SOMEONE TO HELP???

What kind of video are you trying to play? I just experimented with a wmv file, and it it worked fine.

You are misunderstanding the tutorial process. When you first start the tutorial, it asks you to save (a copy of) the file somewhere. Just do that - give it a name and a location, and then proceed. Relax a little. The program IS working.

What I am telling you is that I selected a place, named the file, and did my best to follow the instructions. It's not working. What is it you think I'm not understanding? "Save" and I hit "Save" and I get a message "File not found" That doesn't sound like a non-sequitur to you? And after 2 (now 3 hours) of working, no, I'm not relaxed. I'm frustrated. And I'm not the only one--do you have any idea how many programs are out there to explain Scrivener? ???? Hmm? And now I know why. If I don't get a response soon, a real "we're going to fix your problem" answer, not a condescending "breathe" answer, I'm going to start a dispute process with PayPal. I HATE stuff that doesn't work as promised.

OK. Uninstalled everything. Deleted all history. Restarted computer. This time it worked, installation completed. Tutorial did save--and I didn't get that crazy message. And yes--now the videos play. Sheesh. Don't know what went wrong, but if this happens to you, try the above. :)

Same song, second verse. I tried to follow along with the tutorial video only to get a "do not have permission to save" message when I tried to create the new project. Finally figured out (I think) that I'm trying to work within the tutorial. I cannot get out of the tutorial. I've tried going up to "New Project" and get the right screen, but it's still in tutorial mode. I've wasted a 1/2 day working with this nonsense. Why don't you have tech support? Real tech support, that responds to problems right away and guides new users through this? I officially hate Scrivener.

WOW, you must be a very nice person. :) You understand that the forum is where other users are trying to help you, right? They spend some, of their precious time, to answer your questions, despite the fact they don't owe you anything. Yet, it looks like you think you can be rude.

As it seems from your posts the problem is not with Scrivener but with your understanding how technology works and most likely with your system or the device you are trying to save your files on.

I wish you the best in all your current and future endeavors,

Actually, I'm a pretty nice person, and I've been looking at all the years-old messages that never got a response on this forum. Believe me, when I need to get back to writing, and I've got a program that's not working, an email that says they'll get back to me in 2 days, and a "just relax" message, that doesn't feel good.

I also searched and searched the web, and Youtube for answers--and found loads of programs constructed specifically to help people understand Scrivener. Most of those "become a Scrivener Ninja" type programs cost several times what the program itself cost. Why do those programs need to exist? Because a) the program is complex and obviously is difficult for those who aren't gifted technically and b) because tech support sucks.

I finally figured it out--mostly by myself, and with the help of a very nice person named "Major Major" who did more than tell me I was technically challenged and "wish me the best." He (or she) actually helped, and I was soooo grateful. I've never bought software, app, whatever you call this program that was so complex with so little help offered by the company. When my IT director/software architect husband got home last night he confirmed that in fact I HAD done all the steps correctly. For some reason, the installer malfunctioned. After 6 hours of work, with help only from "Major Major" and my own wits, I got this program working.

It's going to be great, but I lost a whole day of work with something that promises to save time. Yeah. I wasn't a happy camper. And BTW, I see the person above who tried to be friendly got no help at all after "several tries."

You sound perhaps judgmental and not helpful at all since you did nothing but judge and criticize. If this forum is for users to help each other, other than "Major Major" no one did anything--even for the sweet person above. I notice you didn't help them either. Thanks.

I don't want to add any fuel to the flames. I just want, first of all, to confirm that, from my viewpoint as a relatively light Scrivener user who is reasonably proficient technically, it is a complex program. I don't think its difficulties stem so much from its requiring great technical gifts as from its having an idiosyncratic organization and a boatload of features, which will be useful to different writers in different combinations and proportions. (For instance, I have never needed to play a video inside Scrivener--it didn't occur to me that I even could.)

Many people experience Scrivener as "non-intuitive" at first, but I think that's mainly because our software "intuitions" are really habits formed by using the Microsoft Office products that, for better or worse, most people learn to write with. All of which is to say that having difficulties with Scriv on first encounter is not uncommon or unreasonable; but I'd add that there are real benefits once you get over the initial hurdles, because Scrivener does things that Microsoft couldn't imagine doing, since Office is made for offices, not for creative or scholarly writers.

Secondly, WRT tech support, there have been other reports that it is running slow these days, I presume because the technical people are putting huge effort into perfecting the new Windows version that is currently in beta. Literature and Latte is a very small shop, by software industry standards, creating and supporting a complex program. That fact can produce problems of its own. There are various other tools for getting support--the lengthy and detailed manual and tutorial, in the first instance, and these forums as well. Of course, your issue wasn't one that the manual or tutorial would have covered; and the forum also took awhile to get help to you. Major Major is one of several capable and generous fellow-users who chip in here; and generally the snark factor is pretty minimal (you should see some of the flame wars on the Evernote forums). It's regrettable that things did get a little out of hand in this case.

So, after all that, I just want to say that I hope you'll find Scrivener a helpful tool for your work, and these forums a helpful supplement to L&L's currently overstretched tech support. Best wishes for your writing!
