Re: All Work Lost (with Screenshot)

You'd need to do a teardown comparison to know for sure, but I'm wondering how much of the "Apple Premium" goes to Apple shareholders, and how much of it goes to system design, components, and build quality, all of which would contribute to long term reliability.

Re: Windows Trial Version: Open Project, section headers present, but no text

On the Mac, ask your friend to use the File -> Backup -> Backup To command, and check the box to create a ZIP backup. That will keep all the component files together when you email them. (Also, make sure your friend is using Mac Scrivener 2.9 or older. Win Scrivener can't yet open Scrivener 3 projec...

Re: uh-oh...page break before--where did that go?

The Appearance settings only affect the way the project appears in the editor. To change the output document, you need to adjust the Compile settings. If you haven't already, I'd recommend looking at our upgrade guide for Scrivener 2 users, here: https://literatureandlatte.com/scrivener-3-update-gui...

Re: Count actually typed words

One alternative is to never cut the text in the first place. Instead, use the Documents -> Split command to break it into its own document, use the Binder to drag it where you want it, and then Documents -> Merge to glue the pieces back together. This is also slightly safer, because the text is alwa...

Re: All Work Lost (with Screenshot)

Can you reproduce the problem in the absence of a hardware crash? As long as the data loss and the hardware restart are correlated, it is impossible to disentangle the two. Whatever is causing the restarts -- CPU failure? Low level disk failure? Flakey power supply? -- could easily affect data integ...

Re: All Work Lost (with Screenshot)

If you yank your power cord out of the wall, any words that have not yet been written to the disk will be lost. That's true with *any* program, not just Scrivener: the computer's memory goes blank when it loses power. A spontaneous restart is pretty much the same situation. Scrivener is going along,...

Re: Extensive edits lost

Wow! I bought scrivener a while ago ... set it aside due to my 8 AM- 9PM day job. When I get a chunk of time off (like now) I want to learn about use of scrivener and hopefully write. Reading about folks losing their work is scary. Reading the responses and trying to determine what it means is too....

(For what it's worth, the big enemy is expecting to be able to just run something without having to think about it or put any effort into understanding it. If you're that kind of user, you will garbage up any device, OS, or app you use. I have made a great career out of architecting for and cleanin...

Re: Extensive edits lost

Yup, there always will be people, who will take the blue pill , and then there are those who value freedom above all. My father-in-law seems to value the freedom to visit sketchy web sites that deposit malware on his system. Which is fine, as long as he's not asking us to clean up the mes...

Re: Extensive edits lost

Not trying to blame the victims, but there is a very real cost to all the additional complexity we Windows users pile onto our systems. To paraphrase a well-known Windows security researcher, given the choice between stability/security/performance and dancing bears, the average user chooses the dan...

Re: Extensive edits lost

Keep in mind that the Mac Scrivener 2 / Windows Scrivener 1.9 project format was designed before either Dropbox or iOS Scrivener existed. It was modified some to support iOS Scrivener, but mostly by adding a "Mobile" folder: the core structure did not change. In the Scrivener 3 format, eac...

Re: Extensive edits lost

I must say I'm absolutely stunned by the sheer numbers of people who come on this forum to say that Scrivener has somehow eaten their work, and that the responses are so mild, like "well, find your backups" --- as if it was perfectly normal for a program to lose one's work! Hello??!! It's...

Re: Extensive edits lost

JimRac - good points. If a project is broken during a botched sync, is it just the Binder (the XML file) that is actually corrupted? If so, even damaged projects can be re-constructed by going into the project folders and retrieving the RTF text files. It's a pain, but doable. Any file that has cha...

Did you put "Introduction" in the Title Prefix or Suffix for that section layout, by any chance?
