Re: Split Windows

I have often thought that "Technical Support" sounded more like the kind of support you get from IT, which rarely if ever includes tips and training on how to use a word processor... It's no wonder that "Using Scrivener" is where some people start posting questions. Honestly, I ...

Re: Endnote Library syncing problems

Consider this another vote against Endnote (and another vote for Bookends). This problem with ID numbers caused me various problems and some amount of work over a decade ago. It is extraordinary that they haven't done anything about it. Probably laziness because they are "embedded" in a lo...

Re: Split Windows

I will sound like a horrible smartarse, for which I apologise, but one of the obvious things you have missed is that you have posted in the part of the forum that is for passing on tips, not the part that is for asking questions. Which is why technical support doesn't view this area as often as the ...

Re: Mac crashed: where to retrieve Scrivener data?

I meant ask the tech if s/he can retrieve the data from the hard drive. I think that is more likely. But ask about Dropbox as well.

Re: Mac crashed: where to retrieve Scrivener data?

@MICHELLEMEINERS Before you do anything else, ask the technician if he can recover your data. This is urgent. All software that I know of saves data onto the hard drive of the computer. If you want it to be saved somewhere else, you have to configure that yourself. Scrivener will save to your hard d...

Re: Liquid Text and Scrivener workflow

Liquid Text falls into the category of those apps that made me think "I must have that", after which I used it once, and never went back to it again. But what that really says, I believe, is that the kind of work I do doesn't really require that much annotation of pdfs. I almost automatica...

Re: Mac crashed: where to retrieve Scrivener data?

A bit more detail would help people to help you. Normally, the word "crash" refers to a temporary failure, but you seem to be saying that your MacBook has completely stopped working. Is that the case? Did you install the Dropbox app on your computer? What steps did you take to set up synch...

Re: I hate the idea of outlining, but...

@Silverdragon -- Interesting. I took a very quick look at some of Lisa Cron's material on her website, and to me it seems stark obvious, because -- well, I have a PhD in psychology! It reminded me that most people do not really understand themselves or others, so it is often necessary to state the s...

Re: I hate the idea of outlining, but...

@Silverdragon -- yes, of course narrative is almost inevitably sequential. Slightly off the wall, have you ever read any of Jerome Bruner's work on narrative? (Such as this http://ewasteschools.pbworks.com/f/Bruner_J_LifeAsNarrative.pdf . His article The Narrative Construction of Reality is also goo...

Re: I hate the idea of outlining, but...

It's possible that the material we deal with also influences our choices. I am exclusively working non-fiction, and I am either explaining things or constructing an argument. For me, therefore, it is not so much a matter of simple connections, but a matter of "flow". If I get ideas in the ...

Re: I hate the idea of outlining, but...

Without some kind of perception of a basic structure I find iThoughts hard to use. For me, one of the "revelations" of Tony Buzan's method (which I first discovered in a BBC programme called "Use Your Head", first broadcast in about 1970) was his recommendation that you just thr...

Re: I hate the idea of outlining, but...

iThoughts is good for creating system, order, not for brainstorming. Scapple is better for that. Respectfully, I have to disagree. *You* may not find iThoughts good for brainstorming, but that is precisely one of the things I use it for, just as I have used classic Buzan style pen and paper mind ma...

Re: I hate the idea of outlining, but...

I've been using mind maps since about 1972, and I seem to have gradually trained my mind so that I can't work without them. I find that the visual positioning of things is the only way I can organise, now. I have also done this on the floor, putting pieces of paper or piles of documents in a pattern...
